what if other advanced civilizations do not contact us because they consider that we are extremely undeveloped.
being honest here
if they can reach us they are way ahead of us.
we are not even able to reach mars. which is the closer Planet to our home world.
the distance between Terra(prefer this name to Earth) and Mars is insignificant compared to the distance between our solar system and the closest star to us.
not only that we are undeveloped in space travel but also in other aspects
>we still perish because of disease
>we have not started to improve our genetic code artificially to evolve biologically at a faster rate
>we are not capable of designing Artificial intelligence
>over all we are extremely violent and self destructive species
In my point of view if there is Aliens in this universe. they are not contacting us because it would be like trying to teach Nuclear engendering to a focking dolphin. pointless
>>1330445
I disagree with the premise that if aliens existed in our galaxy, they would have found us by now. This line of thinking makes many erronous presumptions. 1: Poorly handels the vastness of the galaxy with the argument that the alien race would endlessly colonize its neighboring worlds (As if an alien race would still adhere to primal insticts such as rapid procreation for survival).
2: It imposes the nature of man upon aliens. I.E morbid curiousity and as mentioned above the darwinian need for procreation.
We are already moving away from our dependency under natural selection and with time our insticts connected to natural selection will dissipate. I believe we can't even correctly speculate as to why/how/if/when/what aliens are like. We need to undergo the development into a multi planetary species in order to with some accuracy gauge the nature of other civilisations with this capacity.

We know what would've happened. It was planned. If they didn't surrender, before or after the nukes hit, a massive invasion of japan itself would've happened. The largest amphibian invasion since Normandy, conducted by every allied force in the world. I forget the details and don't have an info-graphic with me, but they were basically getting ready to use neighbouring islands as launchpads for aircraft, naval support and ground invasions from both the pacific islands and from China's shoreline.
>>1336252
>>1337877
>>1338228
Don't forget, the US is STILL using the Purple Heart awards that were made in preparation for the invasion of Japan. No need to make new ones when you have half a million on hand. Even in 2003, there was some 120,000 of them still in stock.
The atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki was terrible. A ground war in Japan would have been worse. Its hard to imagine, but yes, it would have been worse. Civilians were fed extreme propaganda about the US military, in an attempt to make them resist any Allied invasion attempt, with their lives, if need be. Look at Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and you see the extreme lengths the Japanese were willing to go to fight their enemies.
Also, just to mention, the firebombing of Tokyo killed a similar number of people as both atomic bombs combined, depending on where you get your casualty figures.

One of the many problems with the Fermi paradox is that the first Great Filter, may very well be abandoning the infinite growth model that would require you to colonize the entire galaxy.
Any civilization bent on infinite growth, as readily demonsratable by our own, will likely burn out its resources or destroy its environment, long before they can begin an interstellar colonization program, and any such program, requires quite a lot of resources.
Thus, in order to reach capacity for stage 2, a civilization has to cap its growth goals, and thus, once such efficiency has been achieved, has no reason to actually reach stage 2, for it will never need that level of energy. They might colonize two or three worlds, as backup plans, to avoid extinction from cosmological threats, but once you've done that, there's no reason to colonize any more, as the only way to further ensure survival for your fixed (and probably biologically immortal) population, would be to leave the galaxy or universe.
There's also the stability of the top quark to consider. If tier2 civilizations learn we're living in a false vacuum the first time they build a large enough accelerator to measure the top quark, the only resolution would then be to create their own universe and escape to it. (The creation part of that, at least, being theoretically possible, with accelerators of around that scale.)
>>1334560
Might be a good thing, given that we really don't know what we're doing, and the current economic trends with gene patenting would probably result in people being patented, and all sorts of other nasty consequences.
Eventually, however, yes, it will be done - and perhaps you lot will live to see some of those consequences.

The Pearl Harbor was a tragedy but dropping nuclear bombs on cities full of civilians were a necessary evil, right?
In my oppinion it was an act of terrorism. It fits pretty well into the defenition of terrirsm, it was a use of incredible force used indiscriminately against civilian and military alike targets to force a government into submission.
Maybe it saved lives, maybe it didn't. Maybe the Japs would've surrender fast, probably not but those kind of what if/if not reasonings are pretty flawed since it is impossible to know what could've happened.
And above all, killing civilians to save your own military is not ok. That is a pretty fucked up reasoning desu.
Sometimes it's hard to tell the right from wrong, especially in a time of war.
But the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings are one of the worst warcrimes in modern history, at least in my oppinion.

Are you serious?
>>1328025
Holy fuck what a trip
>>1341264
what's happenin here
>>1343491
Japs brought it on themselves.
You should be glad the bombs were dropped, the damage done was a big factor in keeping the cold war cold and spreading the ideology that limits nukes to this day.
I've been to the peace park in Hiroshima. It's a beautiful monument to the lives list in a terrible attack. Terrible and necessary. I ask you, what do you think a land invasion would have entailed? Do you know what happens with a forcible occupation of that scale? Plenty more civilians would have died, your laughable and hypocritical lack of care for military loss of life aside. Not to mention an insurgency that could have lasted a decade or more. People who think like you are cancer. The nukes were fucking humane compared to the alternative.

if we hadn't dropped the nukes, the Soviets would've reached Japan before they surrendered
call it what you will, but the US was only going after key economic installations to force them to surrender whereas the Soviets were waging total war, they would've utterly destroyed Japan and then annexed them
it would've been much, MUCH worse - just look at what happened to East Germany
Japan would've become another devastated Commie Bloc state with no infrastructure and no ability to stand on its own for a century or so
by dropping two nukes we prevented a post-WW2 proxy war and saved Japan from becoming another North Korea

i totally understand what you mean. but i always think of it this way. for a species to survive those filters, and thrive getting to a stage 2 civilization. you always need a survival instinct, or at least a self preservation one. if they already surpassed the filters. they know that at some point. some time. there might be a plague. or a Rogue AI. what ever you can name. that would compromise their society, race, lives... this is the main reason for them to keep researching and expanding themselves.

Rogue AI might be a concern, especially if your colonies are in communication with each other, but that's the same regardless of how many colonies you have. (Particularly if you've worked out an FTL internet.)
