"The People" is a mythical socialist creation that is used by the "new" (non-aristocratic) elite to accumulate power for themselves. Everything can be rationalized with "The People" and their "will". If you rationalize every idea with the "Will of the people" you can do anything because "The People" include the current ruling class, the military and the law enforcers. Thus: if "the people" chooses to have a dictatorship run by a few individuals that is totalitarian in its nature. It is entirely justified with the idea of "The will of the people" because "The people" in the higher instances in society DID wish for it. Even if it goes against the interests or wishes of the larger populace.

This is the exact problem as the capitalist "Invisible Hand". They are myth-words created for the sole purpose of fooling the citizen to sign the contract between the state and him.

Socialism is NOT about the people's wishes. The people are too many, they have inherited hierarchies among themselves and conflicting ideals which they wish to peruse. They can never be a unified body with a collective idea (unless they are homogeneous - which is against socialist doctrine).

The ONLY time "The Will of the People" can ever be fulfilled is when the (homogeneous) people suffer from a tyrant. The minute they are free from tyranny, they create antagonistic clans.

Socialism is the rationalization of dictatorship by the means of manipulating the larger masses. The worker (who has never ruled) can never rule. There is a limit to both knowledge and capacity. Socialism is radical humanism, and it ignores the fact that humans are flawed. Thus,m it will never work.
