The ENTIRE POINT of the ending of MGS2 is that you don't know what's real and what is an illusion created by the Patriots, and then questioning if the answer to that question really matters. Continuing that story in MGS4 actively cheapens the best ending in the series by telling you exactly what was real and what wasn't. Plus MGS4 makes both endings of MGS1 cannon, which makes no sense.

They are: the two NES titles, Ghost Babel, Portable Ops, Ac!d, Rising: Revengeance (contrary to popular belief, he only did the advertising for this game as a producer). I might have missed some but it's not hard to check if he's there or not. The gameplay quality of the ones I already mentioned is another story, if you care enough play them for yourself.

Idc, everything past 2 was supplemental I'm still glad it lasted as long as it did. Just looks like it's based on 3ds rendition of mgs3. Didn't play it but the aesthetic is changed in weird little ways.

Best to start with either mgs1 (pc version) metal gear 2 (not solid, msx2 emulation) . If you don't really have a "taste" for series after both of those just stop. It's all kinda of elaboration on similar themes and if you don't like the baser material you won't like what comes later. 3 made a lot of people come over to the series who would have otherwise ignored it but people who started with 3 didn't understand the sort of magical realism of the series before or after that. So yeah play in release order. Metal gear 1 is very basic and you could probably be summed up in a paragraph or two. Metal gear 2 while similar in it total contribution introduces a lot of stuff that's continually referenced throughout the series.

I have not regrets about either I genuinely enjoyed scouting out soldiers for my base and switching between boxed solider in PO to attack a base from other angles. I even enjoyed PO+. Only thing bordering on a regret is that I invested so much time in PW before the HD because I had accepted there were never be more than ad-hoc. 100%'d PW twice... might do it again.
