Post anything tech/science related as long as it is relatively unknown, something we haven't seen before and it makes the world look cooler and more interesting than it actually is. can be new, can be old. as long as it isn't something boring and repetitive. has to be real, no fiction.
>>
Is that a nuclear reactor being turned on?
>>
>>1264489
it's a nuclear reactor pulse. removing its control rods, elevating pressure and temperature to critical levels to see how designs of a reactor handle under certain stresses and then a scram (rapidly inserting back the control rods, which you see in 0:10)

the blue glow is cherenkov radiation by electrons moving faster than the speed of light in water (0.75c).
>>

Fun fact: Prince Rupert, Canada holds the record for rainiest year in a given city, with 303 days of rain in a single year, and ranks 4th for rainiest city in Canada by height, at 131 inches per year.

So there's another caveat to the name of this phenomenon.

>moving faster than light moves through water, which is 0.75c
Light gets "slowed" the same way it does leaving the sun's core: there's a bunch of shit in the way of the photons so they bounce around a little, increasing time to the surface slightly. But water's not as dense as solar plasma, so it only slows it a tiny percent, as opposed to the hundreds of years it can take photons to escape the interior of the sun.

It's pretty inefficient as virtually perpetual motion machines go, and will slow down pretty quickly. Fun to make on them on fly though.

Though what a lot of the "there's no such thing as free energy and/or perpetual motion" folks tend to forget - is while that's technically true, you can get pretty damned close. Really, you could provide a whole lotta power if you could just convince folks it wasn't so inhumane to use a few animals, or illegal immigrants, to reset a large wheel or weight once a month... Nevermind things like gravity, the sun, tides, wind, and temperature differences.

All you need to make power is to turn a wheel. Doesn't matter if it's a large one, slow and steady, or a small one, really fast, you can always gear up or down as required.

It's just a separation of the payload from the rest of the rocket. The "Maraia Earth Return Capsule" payload then needed to be safely recovered. I don't remember what happened to the nosecone and booster sections, however. In the source, you can easily see that the payload was the section in-between the nosecone and booster, and they were separated using explosive bolts.

The first several nuclear warheads in a full out exchange would actually be detonated serveral dozen miles in the atmosphere to create large scale EMPs and knock out ground electrical systems

By the time nukes started getting anywhere near people there would be no power, no radio that wasn't static, no electronic devices still working, no running cars, no lights, no phones, no computers -- you would be in the dark with a dead phone wondering why you could see an aurora, and then the lights would start on the horizon.

Think of it this way: power-tools like cordless saws and drills don't render a craftsman obsolete. They only expand the horizons of what he can make, how precisely he can make it, and how quickly he can make it.

Actually both Russia and China successfully developed manoeuvring reentry vehicles that have unpredictable trajectories, drop multiple decoy warheads in front and even ECM jamming pod in one of them. The only possible way to intercept this thing is to hit a missile during first ascend stage. That's why US does everything to place anti-ballistic systems right at the borders of those countries.

Except bosses don't trust employees to work remotely.

I worked as help desk operator for 10 years and we were given laptops with remote access capabilities which we were never allowed to use. In fact I live over an hour away from that office and never once was I or anyone else permitted to work from home, not even when Superstorm Sandy hit us here in the north-east US - my cunt of a boss made us use sick days rather than allow us to work remotely.

The idea is great, the practice is non-existent for anyone who isn't a CEO or COO.

No, you don't. Especially in the aerospace field. The aerospace engineering is the field of engineering which uses the lesser safety coefficients. You can easily find coefficients of 1.05 or 1.1.
I'm a mechanical engineer and we usually use 1.5-2.0 as coefficients, but our stuff doesn't have to fly or even go into space.
