Snakes (and reptilians in general) are the second least intelligent vertebrates, above amphibians. In general, I would say they have the intelligence of most fish. Alligators and sharks are smarter, but still only around the intelligence of a chicken or pidgeon.

It's debatable how much those animals are even aware of their surroundings; they can perceive the world of course but it's through a very strong lens of instinct, not thought.

>>

That's funny, because crocodilians have been seen to use tools in the wild, varanids are capable of distinguishing between human faces, and cobras have the rare gift of self-awareness (ie, if you put a mirror in front of them they can recognize themselves versus another cobra).

So there's that.

Live rodents can fuck up a constrictor.
While they're getting the life squeezed out of them, they'll do their damnedest to escape.
They scratch and they bite trying to get away.
You risk having your snek get blinded by their food, or getting an infection from getting cut open by the little bastards.

Chickens and pigeons are very intelligent by animal standards.

You should see what all those chicken people on tumblr get up to. It's the caged for life birds that are basically brain dead and that's entirely due to a life with zero stimulation.

As for pigeons, they have complex social interactions including grief over dead flock mates. There have been cases where one bird in a mated pair died and it's partner became disheveled and depressed.

No. You could raise and tend to a snake for years, and if it got a chance to eat you, it would. They are completely soulless animals incapable of emotion or really, even, feeling happiness. Their entire existence revolves around avoiding pain and the anxiety of hunger and unpleasant temperature. That last part is why they sometimes tolerate contact with humans. They're stealing your calories for warmth.

They're like if Schopenhauer designed an animal.
>>
>>1264934
Snakes are ambush predators doofus, the rat isn't supposed to see it coming, it's supposed to go "oh fug I'm being killed by a snek" after it's already having its endoskeleton obliterated by the python's muscular might.

It did not live to be full grown. In fact most of them don't. They usually die from some sort of complication or another somewhere down the road, most of the time earlier than later. Source would be me. I get to see them more than most people due to my work. When you breed larger numbers genetic anomlies pop up more. They sell for a SHIT ton sometimes. Crazy what people will pay. I have quite a few two headed specimens in jars, as they really don't live long and I like to preserve them after death. Same thing for other genetic alterations such as conjoined twins and such. My favorite is a gecko with two bodies joining into one head. 3 eyes, one on each side and a single on the forehead.

Interesting stuff.

I had both rats and snakes at the same time once. Tried to feed the rat babies to the snakes, seeing as they probably wouldn't put up much of a fight to the snakes, but they didn't give a shit about them.

My snakes would only eat the dead rats I bought from the store, reheated in the micro-wave. Guess they got used to food that didn't struggle.

Herpetologist here. Advanced reptiles can feel affection, like in some testudine and agamid species, but the kings of "mammalian" levels of affection are Varanidae and Teiidae, especially in larger monitors and tegus. Some large snakes do have people preference and can tell one person from another, espeically highly advanced species like more modern elapids (Cobras, mostly). They have individual personalities and can range from docile as shit to mischievous fuckery.
>>
>>1274185
nah man, just a hognose doing hognose things you look at them funny in the wild and they play dead.
>>
>>1258229
depends on how you define affection.

if you treat them right, as a carnivorous reptile, not a pick up and play pet, they will associate you with food and maybe warmth which is about as much as you will ever get from a reptile.

Snakes gather their water from their prey or absorbing moisture through their skin. They're extremely efficient with their water use so it's very rare they need to take a drink.

I assume these are your assumptions? Or you are trolling? Either way I'll correct it (3/10 if trolling). Not all snakes are equal in intelligence, just like people. Snakes that don't have to hibernate tend to have higher levels of intelligence due to their brain being warm and active all year round. A King Cobra is a somewhat intelligent snake, while a garter snake is smart as a fish. Lizards on the other hand, monitor lizards in particular, are orders of magnitude smarter than an alligator or a shark. Monitor lizards are the most intelligent reptiles on Earth as far as we know. They have personality traits, distinct ways to kill different types of prey, can figure out multiple approaches to find prey, and can recognize their owners. The name monitor lizard comes from their habit of a daily routine of following a path around their territory(say a square mile), as they "monitor" their grounds, and at night settling back in their burrow that they might have dug themselves or stole from a rabbit(and possibly feasted on). Monitors are from tropical or arid areas so benefit from warmth all year which is necessary for higher brain function.

Snakes are less workable than lizards and whatnot. I'd say rare cases they can have nice responses with certain people. But they're kinda iffy on that whole affection stuff. I had a ball python a while back who was real chill and nice to me, but didn't like others. It was a rough time to get it trusting and tame, but it seemed nice enough to understand I was its caretaker. Dont really know if it loved me though.

Lizards though, they are sweet. Some will associate food with you, and will come see you when hungry. But some will just come to the front of the enclosure to just have you in sight and be petted or hang out. The limbs probably make them more relatable.

Mostly, they see you and other humans as a mobile Sun that they can wrap around.

As a result of this, they perceive humans and the affection that we give them as being in a low-stress environment where they don't have to lash out to survive.

Besides the free warmth we give them, no, it is unlikely that they feel affection.

I think they actually refer to her as a Lamia, but I guess the details don't really matter that much as it's not like anything is accurate to any myth.

Just someone throwing shit out that he barely remembers, but IIRC the original myth about Nagas came from some of the groups in the Indochina region. Nagas were supposed to be a proud and noble race that were emissaries of the gods. The Lamia was originally a nationalistic myth out of Early Rome. It was some story about how one of their rival kingdoms, I think where modern Libya is but I can't remember for sure, had a founder and first queen that was a terrible monster that was half woman, half snake that drank human blood.

When Gygax and co created Dungeons and Dragons they just kind of picked through old myths to come up with things to convert into enemies, and then early computer rgs further took those, making Nagas, Lamias, etc into just kind of generic monster people.
And then anime came to make them into fapbait.
Anyone who either remembers more or wants to put effort into looking it up feel free to correct me.

Kingsnakes eat other snakes and are carnivorous, so it sees its own reflection in the lens and pounces to attack it.
