The problem was the gun was so hilariously complex that it you couldn't repair it easily in the field of battle. I believe the easiest way to repair it was to simply swap out for a fresh lower receiver which isn't very cost effective.

You know what, reading this makes me think. The Death Star or any other planet destroying weapon made by a scientifically advanced race/group just isn't that scary anymore. But, I get the feeling that if there were a movie or game or something along the lines of a lesser race/group developing a weapon that could not destroy a planet, but would instead kill everything in a small area, and they had enough to wipe out everyone.
