Mondale, the Democratic candidate running against Reagan in 1984, attracted large crowds too, but he only won one state that year. Trump's base is very loyal to him, but its relatively small compared to Clinton's support. The only reason she doesn't have large crowds, is because she's terribly boring and corrupt, but she's still the number one representative for a popular mainstream political movement. If she wouldn't have had the support of Obama, her husband, the elite, and the mainstream media, she probably wouldn't be nearly as high in the polls.

I don't think any of the other Republican candidates would have won either.
