I'm only here because I need someone nattering away in the background to help break up the silence at home started with vlogs but people tended to be too abrasive or suddenly loud, so at some point it diverted into ASMR.

There used to be quite a few videos where people unintentionally triggered ASMR in others. This was way back in like 2007 or so. That kinda led to the "Whisper Community" which has now morphed into the huge ASMR phenomenon.

I think massage videos by a woman named Lita were a huge catalyst for the whisper community being created.

I’m with you anon. I was in on this pretty early on (2008-09 I think) and I’ve seen this cancerous culture grow around it.
It makes sense; a bunch of people post videos that give them the strange sensation. Then the community starts taking note of common trends in them, and decides to combine them. Then instead of stuff like The Joy of Painting, which was about actually DOING SOMETHING, while a man softly guides us through the activity, and sometimes had the comfy sounds of paintbrushes, we get videos with titles like

It’s inverted. When it started, the ACTIVITY was the most important. Then the explanation/speaking. Then the little noises.
Now it’s just random noises with the occasional mindless jibber-jabber.
Wow, it just occurred to me that we’ve observed the ASMR equivalent of the rise of Modern Art…
