It depends on your taste, a lot of anons (especially on /a/) are critical of more "casual" shows - such as Ned's Declassified School Survival guide and Hannah Montana, avoid these for now.

Personally, I would start out by looking at Drake and Josh, try to watch it without subtitles for a more immersive experience (there's no harm watching it with subs on, learning the language takes time). After that, I suggest moving on to more complex animes, such as The Suite Life of Zach and Cody for a more rich and immersive storyline. Of course, you could take the alternative path and start out with the critically-acclaimed Cory in The House (it's a highly subjective viewpoint, but I think it's overrated) or maybe some Fresh Prince of Bel-Air if you prefer a more retro experience.

Anime is an art style. To liken it to a specific genre of music is entirely correct. Lets say anime is country. There is Dark Country, Pop Country, etc... A lot of people hate country because they view it as "Someone stole my dog and shot my truck I'm a redneck", but it isn't that in its entirety. Some parts of country certainly are, some aren't.

I dislike anime. I have watched animes in the past and enjoyed them, but overall I dislike them. I watched AoT and read the Manga, but after a while it became to convoluted and trashy so I stopped. I'd watch anime if it didn't have all these fantastical elements to it. "Oh, So-and-so has the ultra special and unique dragon power ability." I hate that garbage.

I personally like anime because it does a lot better job in general of introducing fantasy-type elements in a show rather than watching poorly acted cgi films with a very American plot and or themes, and allows a lot more room for expression. That isn't to say that the bulk of it is shit, but you will find really great anime among trash like SAO and "slice of life" animes like YuriYuri that offer little to no plot.

First season is interesting, and full of eye-candy... My advice would be to skip the second season altogether though, as they introduce: "Moe-tron: Defender of the MC."

The way I see it there are two types of anime haters. The first is the ex-weeaboo who did some embarrassing anime related shit when they were younger. They hate their past self and anything that reminds them of it (sort of like how people who used to be really depressed are hard on people who are suicidal). The second is social rejects who need to stoop to seeking approval on an anonymous image board. They reason that if they make fun of a outgroup that makes them part of the cool one. There's also people who don't feel strongly one way or the other but pretend to to stir up trouble, and anime dislikers who don't enjoy it but also don't feel compelled to release an autistic screech any time it's mentioned within earshot.
