Operated a couple of M2s awhile back. Everything about them is satisfying, both sight and sound.

One day there were some weak as fuck female recruits had to go through training how to load and shoot an M2, and thought it was more important to talk about chica Sephora makeup while instructors were giving how-to's. I was just not sure if bullets were actually faster than sound, and since I don't know much about guns and bullets I just had to ask. But they have to be faster, in order to reach a place where the impact sound will reach the listener, faster than the sound of the shots being fired.

Yes, most rifle bullets travel much faster than sound. Typical velocities are 700-1000 m/s at the muzzle. The speed of sound is around 340 m/s. I had the pleasure of firing the British Army's current 105mm(I think) field artillery. The sound was fucking awesome, since we were the first position of 3 firing. The echoes were loud as fuck also, even though it was pretty flat terrain. The smoke and the smell as well were just wonderful.
