Eh, the hype and expectations were way over the top. I don't think anything could have met those.
But now that the dust is settled, I think it's really good game gameplay wise, amazinginly optimized for pc and mediocre at best at storywise. Too bad the biggest thing in MGS series is the story.

Well, MGS 1&2 had lots of mandatory codec calls that explained the story on top of all the optional calls. Peacewalker relied mostly on casettes to tell the story. Ground Zeroes had most of it's story and explanations in the casettes. I guess MGS3 was bit neutral on this, codec calls were mostly background and extras. Don't know much about MGS4 but apart from it being a cutscenefest.

I played them while doing side ops, it was no big hassle. Some of them were actually quite good. The sci fi elements were pretty well thought out and interesting.

You're probably right that some people hyped it up over anything it was going to realistically be, but on the other hand, there's also a lot of cut content that they promised in gameplay demos and the trailers tell not only a far better story than the game itself does but a completely different one as well.

Seriously though, just go back to some old motherbase gameplay and practically every feature about it was complete bullshit. You can't have UAVs on your base, you don't get to see shit you fultoned in, you don't get to train with your soldiers or watch them train, you don't get to customize your soldiers in the slightest, you don't get to customize your MB at all beyond colors, Ocelot never even shows up outside of his mission, any NPC that does show up while roaming is locked away from you and has no lines, you can't have your MB attacked by NPC factions, you can't be attacked at all while on MB and actually have your staff respond, and you don't even get to see the multiple helicopter rides they showed or to see other helicopters on MB.

Mother Base was honestly probably the biggest disappointment in the game for me. It may as well not even fucking exist except for the rare cutscene on return or using the shower that the game forces you to return for.
