I really enjoy math's ability to quantify what we see. The only problem I have with it is the myth that the universe is math. That the universe is beholden to the equations that we invent, but sadly, isn't. I don't know, I'm just bothered that modern science is so obsessed with it that ...I don't know. I feel like explaining things only in mathmatics is failing to really understand the world.

ahahha what?

we don't literally invent the equations. We just discover them. An equation is just a relationship. Are you christian?
>>
>>1186682

Considering there is a literal infinite number of ways to represent any open equation (not talking about swapping the algebra -- I mean group/geometry/topology symmetries, representations of probability and calculus and measure theory and interpretations thereof, breaking up dimensionally and transforming the dimensions, presenting as an infinite series of approximations, etc.

And that's just on a superficial level without even thinking about the philosophy of the interrelation between math and physics (e.g. why it has so many spectacular successes yet currently a couple spectacular failures).

And for those who study, say, atoms, an equation is a far more powerful representation than any image from an electron microscope, so for us the equation is not merely a relationship but a representation of reality analogous to, but better than, sight or smell.

Does it really need to be said that going from foxes to humans/primates is a big biological leap?

Also, having a single trait share the same genotype (or at least effectively, as our modern understanding of "genotype" goes beyond just the 4ary code) with many disparate but seemingly evolutionarily relevant phenotypes is an uncommon phenomenon. It may hint at past forms/behaviors of the particular animal line (a time when canids formed larger, more complex societies?), in one hypothesis. No such phenotypes/genotypes have been identified in primates yet, in part because again, primates are complicated -- even the usual suspects like the Koch group that might be manipulable on lesser mammals will irreparably fuck up a primate.
>>
>>1193338

If you think about it, as far as off-the-shelf parts go, a dildo would be pretty ideal for a heavy-duty control stick seeing as it has to respond to vibrations, lateral and longitudinal stresses, heat and moisture gradients, etc. And of course, it's the perfect grip size..

I know what you're trying to say, but there is an incredibly strange amount of predictive power that mathematics has on our world. In physics, for example, basic assumptions about how a system behaves mathematically can produce a ton of predictions by just working with the math. Those predictions are often right, and reveal structure to the universe around us before we even observe it physically.

One case of this was black holes. Einstein's general relativity theory is a very strong statement about the nature of spacetime and it's behavior. One "solution" to the equations governing this produced singularities that not any matter or light could escape from. Upon seeing this, he thought his math was wrong because such an insane object had never been detected. However, it was only several decades later that we began to detect black holes through astronomy.

There are a ton of examples like this, and it stems from the very idea of "forcing" math onto the world around us. If your math accurately describes some system, then the mathematical consequences of that model often apply to the system you are modeling.

The "obsession" modern science has with this method stems entirely from its usefulness and effectiveness.

math is microscope or hammer - a tool
ideas do not come from math but math helps express them
for example a gun
first you have chemistry, physics, metallurgy then you have to make it work together
math helps balance it
just like you'd use measuring cup to make a biscuit you can't make biscuit out of measuring cup
thus this webm is bullshit
>>

>>
>>1186682
>>1182979
>>1198286

the only reason the world seems to be controlled by math is because that kind of math is created to describe the observations we have about our world. Math in itself doesnt really say anything about the world, like words in themselves doesn't say anything about the world. but both math and other languages can be used to describe what we see.

alot of math is purely theoretical though and has nothing to do with anything outside of pure mathematics. I agree that a lot of people think too highly of math in the way that they think math controls the world and that they try to put some mathematical equation on everything.

the only reason math can be used to describe alot of things is because it's been constructed to describe those exact things. So in that way it can only really predict things if those things behave like things we've seen before and have made a mathematical formula for.

The idea that everything follows the mathematical formulas we create are not always true though and it has really fucked up economy; the formulas they use to predict the economy only really works because everybody follows those theories. They dont say anything about how the economy would work naturally, only how they work if everybody does what the theory expects them to. and they do because the theory tells them that that is the best action if everyone else does as the theory expects them to.

I don't think many people (or at least people who study any field of science) think that "the universe is math" or that the "world is controlled by math". I think you have misunderstanding of what mathematics and how it is used by mathematicians and other quantitative fields.

I don't think anyone in academia would describe mathematics as the foundation of our reality, but that reality is the foundation of mathematics and is a tool to quantify and understand our reality.

You block a checkmate in return for losing threat on a pawn, losing a bishop, putting your knight in an awkward position where it cannot do anything.

At that point it is Rook, Bishop, Knight vs 2x Knights 2x 2x Rooks.

It's not that the universe is math. It's that the universe is beholden to certain fundamental rules. We then use math to express these rules in a way that we can understand.

Then there's also spookier stuff like entropy. All the laws and equations used in the field of thermodynamics are derived from statistical principals, that don't have any real connection to a physical reality. However, if you ever have a large number of things (really anything) that are able to act in a random way, they will fall in line with thermodynamics.

You can make all sorts of mathematical models for theoretical universes that violate newtonian physics and stuff, but you can't ever break thermodynamics, because it must be true so long as "stuff" "things" "anything" exists.

“You never know true beauty until you see Earth from space, or true terror until you hear someone knocking on the space station door from outside. You look through the porthole and see an astronaut, but all your crew is inside and accounted for. You use the comm to ask who it is and he says he’s Ramirez returning from a repair mission, but Ramirez is sitting right next to you in the command module and he’s just as confused as you are. When you tell the guy this over the radio he starts banging on the door louder and harder, begging you to let him in, saying he’s the real Ramirez. Meanwhile, the Ramirez inside with you is pleading to keep the airlock shut. It really puts life on Earth into perspective.”
