Yes. The contra-rotating props cancel out the effects of torque on the airframe, as well as eliminate tangential airflow (aerodynamically more efficient). The system is more powerful than a single propeller, too.

On the downside, they are incredibly loud due to transonic tip speeds and constructive sound interference between the propellers

I've heard one fly over and he was somewhat low I was sure he was at 100 feet it was so damn loud. I read that they're were so loud submarines could hear them.
>>
>>1127266
Yeah, the props are enormous, and the constructive interference between them creates some really low frequency sound waves that travel a long distance

then silence.

Then you have a hairless ape sitting in an aluminum tube with nothing keeping him up there and realize how fragile and beautiful life is, and how amazing all of mankind's achievements are, and it gives you hope for the future, just as this man had hope that Kevin, of all people, would know how to safely land that plane.

Actually, Russia was just smuggling a bomber through the border, by switching off the bomber's transponder and hiding his radar signature (and flight plan) behind a cargo's one.

That's how they make appear whole flight squadrons in sandniggerstan without anyone knowing.

I asume you mean the f35 bc all the bad talk about it but the F35 is just a cheaper variant. Not all countries are willing to spend 377 million per plane like america. And the f-22 is designed to be a air to air fighter while the f-35 is a multirole fighter that can do air to air, bombing and CAS. The f35 is more stealth because it is a lot smaller and it can even carry more/heavier ordinaces and the F35B and C are fit for carier operations.... F22 ist
F22 would kill the f35 in aerial combat but i think you get the point, the f35 is a better choice for the countries that respectfully use taxmoney in a smart way.

>b-2 is outdated and is getting replaced.

It's not outdated yet -- the estimate is that China will be able to pretty much overcome its stealth capabilities (except with really good jamming) by iirc 2025 or something, but more importantly, the b-2 is a medium-range bomber that has gone to low-mid altitude, while long-range high-altitude bombing is still covered by the b-52, so they need an upgrade for that role.

On the other hand, the b-2 can still easily penetrate nations that aren't Russia or China, especially with jamming from the f-35, and the b-2 is optimized for high-freq radar, while the b-21 will be optimized for low-freq, so there's some advantage to maintaining both.for a while.

Its a bomber that is extremely expensive to maintain, the ratio between flying hours and maintenance is abysmal and it serves little to no purpose in the asymmetric warfare of today. The B-2 is an outdated concept.

That's kinda the price of stealth technology. If they replace it, which I doubt they will in the near future, they'll probably try to integrate another stealth design pretty similar to the one that's in operation now, only it'll take several billion dollars and a couple decades to create.
>>
>>1137537
Yeah, an F16 could do that too with enough refuelings on the way and a pilot that brought enough coffee. The point is that a long range bomber can fly there and back and doesn't need to be refueled several times going in and out.

Also about prices, I heard - maybe it is a rumor - that US air force is using (again) some OV-10 Bronco in Syria, in order to see if it is still available as anti-guerilla airplane. The interest is the price : fuel, mechanics etc.
Last time I remember USAAF using OV-10 was Vietnam, I don't know for Irak.

Not a real useful post, but just to tell how much I love planes.

They are for me the only way to get away from this muddy earth I dislike so much. Just get high with no drug, and feel alive.

See the sun everyday, just by passing through the clouds. Feel the takeoff like if I was leaving all these bad toughts on the ground to reach the only good ones, leave theses dark bad thoughts so far from me.

Just make one with the plane, in the air. And feel, comfortable. Like another man, like a real; full one. Feel complete and leberated.

Suspended to the sky by only one motor, or not; sailplane was really a good experience.

And it makes me feel good.

Piece of the plane's tail broke off in mid flight. Causes plane to enter loop pulling no less that 17 G's, killing the pilot well before he hit the ground in the VIP spectator stands at no less that 530 miles per hour. The unusual lack of fireball is due to the plane's specially designed boil-off cooling system.

they're actually supposed to be ignited on the ground to bring the plane to a standstill in the length of a soccer stadium. in that webm the guy accidentally lit them in the air, making the plane stall, fall to the ground, and get severely damaged.

Naw the pilot had a heart attack and died.
>>
>>1125760
I wonder if those flames add any noticeable thrust?
>>
>>1127263
It's not. The hose method relies on the skill of the pilot, which can vary a lot. While the pole method relies on the fueler, who trains for it and is consistent, it's his one duty. the pilot just needs to stay a certain distance away from the fueler, and the pole is guided into the jet. Besides training every pilot on how to guide a probe into a funnel is more expensive and time consuming than training a few fueler crews on how to guide a probe into a hole.

It actually wouldn't surprise me if they did. It's not the flames per se, but thrust from the exhaust can be significant. Engineers found that the exhaust from the Supermarine Spitfire, for example, added about 70 pounds of thrust to the aircraft at max throttle. I'm sure there is thrust being added by the exhaust on that plane (Constellation, I think?) but it's really small compared to what's being produced by the prop.

I had the audacity to think I could fly without the carburetor float valve getting stuck open. Seriously though, I didn't crash, I just landed on a road. The NTSB never even knew about me, you're only allowed to tell the NTSB if you have structural damage or bodily injury - they don't care about engine failure. There wasn't a scratch on the airplane. The FAA did their own investigation and found that I did nothing wrong.

I fly an aircraft that refuels with hoses but can also be refueled by a boom. I will give you that refueling off a boom is probably safer as a whole than refueling of the drogue but only because the skilled boom operator has all the control. That being said it is incredibly sketchy getting into position behind one of those heavy tankers and requires a lot of training. There are a lot of aerodynamic forces fighting you. In terms of being cheaper I disagree. First the cost of launching my aircraft and a few helos is cheaper than launching my plane and a large ass tanker full of gas. Second every pilot has to be trained and then refuel off a tanker every couple of months to maintain currency to refuel off of a boom. So honestly training every pilot to successfully rendezvous on a tanker and maintain position for long periods of time is as much effort as training helicopter pilots to rendezvous on a drogue refueler, plug in, and maintain position. Actually I would say out of all the refueling I do 95% of it is practicing probe and the rest is boom.

Noooo buddy nooo; not a song but a sound. The Stuka had sirens on its landing gear coupled with the airbrakes. It produced this horrible sound, used as a psychological weapon.
I remember, my grandma used to told me that she saw theses planes, going down, bombing and go back; with this horrible sound; everybody in the village was terrified. Also this plane was associated to civilian slaughter because they used to attack the inflow of refugees with their machinguns, and still this horrible sound. It was during a period we call "l'exode" in French.
But the funny fact is that the stuka was a shitty plane. Slow because it had too much aerodynamic drag; thats why the pilots were disassembling the sirens, parts of the rigid landing gear etc

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold on. That's less than 2ft in length and about 5 inches wide. I've seen images of planes that have miraculously landed despite missing entire parts of their body. We all have, it's no secret. But most of those were old ww2 bombers.

Does this have something to do with it's small frame hindering lift capabilities along with pilot control?

I'm not saying you're wrong, at all. I simply can't comprehend why flying correct was dependent on that tiny section?
>>
>>1185510
It's because it was flying at incredibly high speeds at low altitude much above its rated limits, and where losing anything causes large changes in aerodynamic forces and is lethal. Also, the guys in WWII bombers could correct for the lack of a wing, while this guy was knocked out before he could react.
>>
>>1127240
>>1127252

Transonic tip speeds aren't an inherent feature of contraprops, but above a certain amount of input horsepower you have either spin the props fast enough to go transonic at the tips or you use really huge ones, which aren't always possible. For planes that fly over 450mph large bypass turbofans work much better, but I don't know if the USSR had any when they built the TU-95.
