the scale of the noise is not appreciated in a recording like that - how booming it is, deafening. distorted recordings more accurately convey this feeling than clean ones. maybe i'll try altering the sound files of a game to make them louder in comparison to other sounds. force the volume to be turned up 2x to hear npcs talking and then get floored when you fire.

Because its loud, and the propeller gearbox requires more than standard maintenance. I absolutely love them, and that specific engine is ingenious, but they never really gained popularity. I, for one, would love to see it more

Engine start of a Mig-15
This jet used a Kilmov VK-1 engine, which in the realm of engines, is a simple design. Two centrifugal compressors, one shaft, several combustor cans, and one turbine. This was a very successful design for the Russians in the early jet age. When starting, they produce a really deep humming/vibrating noise, which is the sound of the compressor stalling at such low RPM.

You'd be in a room and you could hear wind blowing in windows, distant gun fights, you then fired a pistol and it effectively deafened you for a good 5 seconds until the sound returned (obviously super human ability to regain natural sound balance levels) but 90% games sound like true ass, 5% sound ok, 4% sound good then there's the ones that actually try like BFBC2.

>>1080533
What is the situation?
>>1080562
Yeah, the Russians have a thing for beefy landing gear. It supposed to be able to take off and land on less-than-optimal condition "runways." I have a feeling that is because Russian military runways are not maintained very well, so they over-engineer the gear to withstand crappy surfaces. Heavy gear = lots of work to retract.

>>1081779
I looked it up on the Internet and I got shocked: people REALLY think that Asia is the most densely populated continent. So you could be serious.
Example:
https://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110411123716AADuJzx
>What is the most densely populated continent in the world?
>1. Best Answer: Asia - it contains India and China - both have pop of over 1 billion
>2. Definitely Asia
>3. Asia
>4. Asia?
>5. Asia 4,150,000,000
>6. Asia, it has an average of 203 people per square mile. Europe is second with 134 people per square mile.
Not a SINGLE correct answer.
This belief is mirrored by all top ten “expert” links in Google:
https://archive.is/oldest/https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=most+densely+populated+continent&num=100
A proof that the majority is always wrong. And a proof of all tripfags’ intellectual supremacy over anonymous.
>>1081757
Data for Asia from your own GeoLounge link:
>Area (km2): 43,820,000
>2010 population: 4,164,252,000
>Population density (per km2): 246
Spot the error.
Simple calculation: 4,164,252,000 / 43,820,000 = 95. Not 246...
And they are TEACHERS. Idiocracy is real.
>>1076505
theres a few reasons, but the big ones are that is one heavy gun and if you fired that standing up you would be put on your ass the second you pulled that trigger. I have a 50 cal flintlock muzzle loader and the kick from that feels like it could rip my arm off, i could only imagine how that fucker kicks.
>>1076622
they all do, you just have to set your sound to war tapes bro
>>1080785
What part of the design were you involved in?
>>1080789
Yeah, that and better metallurgy. The higher the temperature of the gas exiting the combustor and entering the turbine stages, the more efficient they can be. Currently turbine engine technology is largely limited by the temperature the turbines can withstand. Ceramic-coated steel and high-nickel alloy blades can only take so much

Came here to say just this. The war tapes setting in Bad Company 2 made it the best sounding game I've ever played. With a proper set of speakers and a subwoofer (or nice headphones, I assume) the sound alone put you right in the middle of a combat zone.
Sound design in games is so, *so* fucking important and it gets thrown to the side in the vast majority of cases. Once I have the money to start messing around, I want to get into video game production. Sound design would be one of my top priorities, because it adds so fucking much to the experience.

Literally exactly what I thought. Funny I'm finding this out like a decade later.

These directed warning sirens are fucking loud, and impressively directional. A few years ago the system in my town (San Luis Obispo) was tested and when the siren was aimed at me (after the delay) from half a mile, maybe 3/4 of a mile away, it wasn't just "audible" it was uncomfortably loud.

I love how rally engines in the 80s were basically running right at the edge of blowing up, so they literally sound like they're about to fall apart all the time.

CRAM, it's a system that shoots down Mortar rounds before they explode.
Most likely situation here is insurgents firing at what appears to be a British army base in a combat zone.

Apparently they copied this error from the world’s foremost authority on this matter, the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, Population Division:
http://esa.un.org/unpd/wpp/DataQuery/
>Population density (persons per square km), as of 1 July
Funny how it confirms popular belief.
