After the dissolution of the Union, Russia (and Eastern Europe in general) experienced a massive brain drain, with endless streams of engineers, doctors, scientists, and other educated professionals leaving the country. If you check /int/ or even any Russian imageboard like dvach, you'll see posts of Russian undergraduates asking something along the lines of "I want desperately to leave this shithole and work somewhere -- anywhere -- else in the first world. I have old Russian friends scattered all around Europe and the Northern Hemisphere -- Estonia, Germany, Belgium, Britain, the US, and Canada.

This a problem Americans have, they have "Veterans day", a celebratory day based not the world wars, and they try to export their prideful pre-war-esque foolishness to other nations. "Remembrance day" is more like attending a funeral, though its not just about the loss of life its also about the maturation of the world's view of war, from a wonderful adventure, to hell on earth. The only happiness and pride one should feel on that day is not for militarist bullshit but for the fact the war is finally over.

Why do the former soviet nations get a seat at the table in this event? Because they helped end the war and their people got a taste of the horror that should have been stopped in 1919. To deny them participation would be a crime against history and peace.

The war made everyone involved monstrous, even Canada was involved in atrocities such as raiding cities like barbarians. Though in truth everyone was just as bad before the war and had the same blood on their hands. Its just people would rather forget this and claim their own nation and its people are without sin, but this is why remembrance day is so important. It encourages us not just to remember just how bad things were, but to also try and atone ourselves of these sins by never letting them happen again.
