Certain liberties cannot live in a world where the security that birthed them no longer exists. Freedom of speech, of expression and religion are all things that thrive because the rules of our society deem them so. We have the security of legal protections to grant those liberties. Without the security of knowing something like politically dissenting speech cannot be silenced our society would quickly devolve into a might-makes-right dynamic.

It's an ugly truth and one I myself have no joy in observing, but sometimes a trade of liberty for more security can ensure some continuance of both versus a course than can lead to their loss.

The two are integrally tied and knowing when and how to balance them requires more nuance than quotes from dead statesmen used to neutralize arguments.

I generally agree with you there. The only problem is it's hard to balance a healthy set of cultural exchanges between myopic globalization and xenophobic isolationism. Those two extremes are rather analogous to the the dichotomies between progressive and conservative groups in a way.

Left unchecked, the progressives charge off into unknown space without a hint of consideration or forethought to their actions. For example, if I took a test, it would say I'm somewhat conservative. The Left has tried very hard to equate the excesses of liberal society to their idea of white privilege and European imperialism.
