We already have a bunch of cool papers of space, astronomy, aerospace engineering and the likes. But what about science here on Earth?
Post cool papers of science that happens here on Earth. Particle accelerators, petri dish cultures, nuclear reactors, chemical compounds, you name it; it all goes here.

Just for you: Neil Degrass Tyson in the Super Kamiokande Neutrino detector in Japan
>>6954619
Another of Super Kamiokande. All the bulbs you see are photomultiplier tubes trying to see light emitted by an interaction of neutrinos with the medium in the detector.

Okay telescopes are allowed since they are on the ground. The HESS telescope array which is looking for gamma rays.

sexy ass telescope dang
You use these at test ranges to monitor aircraft and weapons.
I like large but mobile scientific equipment like this.
>>6954631
Oh cool. I didn't know we had ground based gamma ray telescopes.

I'll dump a few of nuclear reactors now.
This is a real picture of the Advanced Test Reactor. The blue glow comes from Cherenkov light, this light is a bit like the "wall of sound", only for light. It is produced when particles travel faster than the speed of light in the medium.
>>6955453
This one is blurry but I like it too.
>>6955456
When unstable atoms break up in nuclear reactors, part of their mass goes into the energy of the product atoms and particles, which can then go very fast! Those are the particles that produce Cherenkov radiation.
>>6955462
Nuclear reactors that produce energy. The smoke coming at the top is water vapor heated by the reactor.
>>6955465
I actually don't know why nuclear reactors are shaped this way, but I think they look pretty cool. I'm assuming the thick concrete walls are used to stop radiation from leaking out.

The Foucault pendulum is an elegant proof of the Earth's rotation. Due to the very small friction at the point where the pendulum is attached to the ceiling, rotation of the Earth under the pendulum becomes apparent over the course of a day.

did you really have to respond?
>>6954644
>>6954608
Just add a Megadeth logo to that first one and i'd use it.

The thick concrete walls are cooling towers. Water is converted to pressurised steam by the heat from the fission reaction, which is then used to turn a turbine which activates a generator. The steam is passed into the massive cooling tower so that it can cool and become water again.
Still my favourite

Has anyone got papes of the NR-1?
I've been trying to find something good to use but haven't found anything. the interior photos tend to be uninspiring (I'm guessing because she was so absolutely cramped on the inside) and most of the exterior images are limited or at an odd angle.
This is the only piece of interesting art of it I found was, at the largest resolution I found it, too small to post on /wg/.

Those towers are for cooling the water used in the reactor- they're built that way because that shape is easier to build and sturdier than a straight-walled tower, and it promotes better air flow for cooling the water!
>>6958035
i wonder why that is
>>6956107
Isn't that a jet engine?
>>6955511
How do you use a larger than 1080p image as a wallpaper? It ends up looking all blocky for me unless I set it to "Center"
>>6955467
As others said, it has nothing to do with reactor itself. Some of coal power plants have these cooling towers too - they're just cooling towers. And they're that common in PWR (popular in US) but you have other types like CANDU, BWR etc.
>>6955465
So it's not the smoke because there's no fire ;) only clouds/gas.
But honestly - have any idea for this thin chimneys at reator buildings? How it's can be "no emmision energy"? I've heard about controlled emmision from reator to lower the preassure in the vesell and building.

you can resize/crop it to 1080p. I've done it for you, and you can also ask the good folks at the IMT for more resizes/crops in the future.
>>6961347
id recommend doing a beginner tutorial for gimp or a other free shoop software.
you wont regret it and you can do all the easy things like resize, watermarks... which are basically simple mouse clicks.
you dont have to be a smart ass for that.
