I thought we were supposed to earn what we have? I for one think that it's not fair to inherit a fortune that you didn't personally work for. After insuring your offspring is able to stand on their own two legs financially, shouldn't the rest go to benefit society as a whole, rather than those whom happen to be born under a certain name? Certainly, this would result in a more balanced playing field.
Also, how is inheritance anything like welfare? One is transferred to those who need it most and the other is simply passed down regardless of their merit or ability.

I disagree, but I suppose there isn't much more I can do to convince you, since it's subjective. I believe that those in need deserve help, and those whom are already able to help themselves should give to those in need. You're absolutely right about doing what someone wants with their money, with the exception of the transfer of large sums of money to another person. I'd say that the people are always entitled to the end of what they require to at least survive, no matter what time they happen to be born at. They'll receive no more than those after them even if this money comes into governmental ownership at whatever time they are alive.

I'm not arguing for even dispersal to the entire populace, if that wasn't clear. The free market will in some form still exist, only accumulated wealth will at the time of one's death will be returned to the state for distribution for those who need it of and when they do, not every person. I don't see how diminishing returns factors into it.

It was a challenge to an arbitrary notion of 'even distribution', which you ellaborated beyond to say you do not mean 'perfectly even, by admitting the inevitability of the free market. I misinterpretted the extent to which you were focused on even distribution.

Further, I certainly don't mean radical egoism. I meant to lead to a conversation over the notion that wealth concentrated in the hands of the few can lead to the benefit of the whole in certain circumstances, and that those circumstances can be all but ensured through proper incentivisation.
