I use gifview and xwinwrap with the following command
xwinwrap -ov -fs -- gifview -a -w WID +e Wallpaper.gif
It works pretty well with i3

Some reddit user called Idolkeg made this:

It works pretty well and is free.
GIFs seem to only loop once so you can use this to convert them to mp4.

Look up software for animated wallpapers. Bionix, for example. Might take up some RAM, though, I wouldn't advise if your computer's shit.

They can still be used without, but they won't be animated.

It could only loop once because the gif was saved that way

If it only loops once in your browser, then you'd need to resave it with the right settings.
