Every two years, I change my sorting methods, feels like cleaning your flat, changing the furniture's place but nothing really changes and nothing is really easier to access.
How do you sort and keep your stuff sorted and clean?
Software used:
>RED2 (Remove Empty Directory)
>Video Comparer (Video duplicate cleaner)
>Visipics (Pictures sorter)
>Everything (Search tool)
Logical sorting:
>by year
>by theme
>by type
>by source
Been on windows for a while so I don't have any names for other OSs.
No Cloud tools. Anyone using a cloud soft should be shot.
Pic unrelated, my wallpaper in 2011.
I spent a few days recently finally implementing an organised file system on my PC. I went into every folder and cut what was unnecessary, arranged everything into folders and subfolders based on their contents, edited the metadata of my music files and optimised the file structure of my music library, sorted my internet bookmarks into many different folders, deleted games, music and programs I didn't use and got rid of incomplete files, empty folders and other miscellaneous shit I didn't need. Pic related is the root file structure I had for a long time but only now is it truly organised.
Once it is organised you have to make consistent time to keep it that way. Every Sunday I sort, backup and comb my system to ensure it stays the way it is using a custom routine I made. Everything is a very useful for program for this as you can sort your files by type and by the last time they modified for effective backup.
I find it easy to keep everything organised now as when I download things it always has a place to go, plus I'm more reluctant to download anything now if I don't need it. You feel to deal with everything you download as you download it to keep the system you worked on for days in perfect form.

bump, this is exactly the kind of advice I'm looking for.
Sort by 'Last Used' or 'Most Used.' The good stuff will rise to the top.

Drowning in files and documents. How can I change it?
