What makes a wallpaper great?
I've got a half transparent taskbar on the left and my recycling bin in top right corner. So no distracting color on the left side and no details in the top right is one of my requirements.
Having most of the image in soft focus is a good way of fulfilling that
warm colors aren't a requirement but a nice plus
If there's a cute animal, I can take neutral lighting.
If there's a bunch, I can even take cool lighting.
I like the idea of album-related papes, but most don't work too well. Here's one exception.
And here's another.
I frequently mirror papers so that the weight is on the right side; it balances better with the taskbar.
This is about as detailed as I can tolerate. The white bokeh in the back is a bit distracting but w/e
Dark colors are another plus. Using the sky as the backdrop for a photo does fulfill the whole subject-isolation, no-dense-details thing, but I find light colors attract more attention, and I like my wallpapers fairly subdued.
Here's a darkened sky that I think works. Film grain is yet another positive.
Another thing I don't care for is having the horizon in the shot - 'cause the strong contrast in lighting between the earth and sky is distractingly noticeable through the taskbar

I looked back through your requests and realized a lot of what I posted doesn't fit as well as I thought.
Guess I got overexcited. Sorry 'bout that.

I am bold enough to say that wallpapers are the modern equivalent of buying art and aside from basic rules of aesthetic, its all totally subjective in the end.
