if it helps, i feel that our lives mean even more if there isn't anything after death. We must find meaning within our short lives without the promise of more. It also gives us freedom to find our own meaning without it having been predetermined by a power not our own.

well you can choose to think like that but really, you ARE matter and energy, just like everything else. no more a waste of it than anyone. and as far as achieving something, most of us will never achieve anything that will last much longer than ourselves. all we can really do is try to enjoy our time while we can.
