Lets see some Mages, Magicians or Magic
Is technology our attempt to make magic real?
>>6805669
>atheists triggered
I've just finished the Magicians books and would recommend them to everyone
If you went back in time with a flashlight or a solar powered CD player, you would be burned for witchcraft

Does anyone else notice the small yellow flame head with Chinese eyes?
Well we don't have a unified theory of science, we still don't actually know how the universe works.
The two leading theories, relativity and quantum mechanics are directly incompatible with each other. Neither is right and cannot be reconciled.
Perhaps the missing piece is something else, something we have forgotten over time and once knew.
Perhaps an understanding of how the universe works and how to manipulate it has been lost?
>>6805644
magic is just technology we don't understand
>>6815850
that's retarded
did you even think for a second about it?
magic is almost always described as either directly or indirectly based on the mind of the magician
sure, there are staffs, tomes, crystal balls and whatnot - but it's almost always assumed in fiction that even if you strip a mage naked and throw him in a prison cell he would be able to do something magical about it
technology works primarily through objects
magic works primarily through the subject

Not everything is a meme, somethings are just thoughts or ideas.
>>6816358
You make it sound like there are established rules for magic, when there isn't.
If a piece of magic requires certain objects to be present, either for their symbology or because they have some kind of intrinsic stored power themselves. Then without them your naked mage would be stuck. So magic may work through objects, in the same way you say technology does?

Reminds me of Quick Ben from MalazanBOTF

>You make it sound like there are established rules for magic, when there isn't
If you think that, you need to read more fantasy books. I have yet to come across fiction where throwing a fireball is as easy as picking up a sword and swinging it.
The implicit rules are: you either have to be born with the gift (then all others who are not are basically fucked and can't learn it), or you have to dedicate your whole life to the pursuit of magical abilities (then all others who do not do that are basically fucked and can't learn it).
>If a piece of magic requires certain objects to be present, either for their symbology or because they have some kind of intrinsic stored power themselves. Then without them your naked mage would be stuck. So magic may work through objects, in the same way you say technology does?
Yeah, but tech-objects are generally usable by non-mages. The naked mage might not be able to cast his best spells without object, but those object are generally absolutely useless to non-mages.

What about people who are changed by a magical event?, often through no choice of their own. Perhaps it's you who need to read more, for example in the Rivers of London books where the character is learning magic in modern day London he often comes across people who have been changed by an event or by proximity to other magic. They were not born with or learned magic.
It is an excellent series of books, that really push the boundaries of magic into the modern real world.
From one of my faves

you are like one of those retards who search hours on the net for pictures of black men with small dicks - just to "prove" that black men indeed aren't bigger or above average
I've never been able to play RPG games because I could never choose between a warrior or a mage.
On the one hand, warriors kill shit with their strength and steel, which is manly and badass. On the other hand, mages are so intellectual/magically powerful that they can destroy a tremendous amount of things using arcane power.
Please help me decide, have a pape in return.
i always run mage first, always liked the idea of ones intelligence being the weapon.
> that is all i've got.

who would atheists be triggered by the girl out of never ending story?
>>6818281
It's a fancy meme thing they turned it into.

I'm quite fond of cigarettes myself
Technology is the real magic of the world and us nerds are its Mages

That's Morrigan from Dragon Age, same vidya franchise as OP's pic.

>would recommend them to EVERYONE
That alone already makes you an unreliable source for recommendations. Plenty of people who would dislike your taste. Recommend to whom the recommendation suits.
>>6827194
"Recommend to whom the recommendation suits."
What? which planet are you from.
Also, if you're posting in a wp thread then post a pic with your cheeky comments

How much wood could a wood chuck chuck if a wood chuck could chuck atheism?
>>6816449
That's what a meme is, dipshit.
>>6834201
by definition a meme is an element of a culture or system of behavior passed from one individual to another by imitation.
The phrase ' Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.' comes from Arthur C Clarkes three laws and so is not a meme, it isn't a saying, it came from his books.
It also seems to me to be derogatory, I don't think you can say it's a meme dipshit.
I mean otherwise you could say that any book or writing is a meme because through reading it the ideas have been repeated. This would be stupid.
>>6834201
Richard Dawkins, the scientist most responsible for the term "meme" was defining ideas that are infectious, so that people come to believe them against proof or rational standards. So, you're criticising someone for thinking there are any ideas that are objectively true or false instead of believing, as you apparently do, that its all just a matter of which arbitrary un-thoughts you get infected with first. I won't bother to call you a name - you've just said something so monumentally stupid you can't even be fairly compared to the first guy to say "Hurr, Derp, this things's not loaded, watch this...".
>>6834524
How do you figure the Clarke quote is derogatory? I could see you saying it was meant ironically maybe, but I'm not following "derogatory".
>>6834532

So in your mind everything is a meme? you would apply this term to every bit of great literature that's ever been written?.
Also this is a wp board, post a pic if you comment
>>6834537
Applying the term 'meme' to literature is what I find derogatory. Applying it to a silly Kermit pic is fine but to slap it on a term that came from excellent writing is to me not acceptable
Also post a pic with a comment
>>6810667
That would be actualy very cool. Have you ever read some Lovecraft?
the thread that never dies neeevaaaaarrrr
>>6834558
I think the current use of the word is the issue here. "Meme" was a word coined by Richard Dawkins to describe the way ideas and information undergo natural selection, similar to the way that genetic traits do. Anything from technology and science to quotes and character archetypes can be considered a meme. There's nothing inherently wrong with referring to anything as a meme.

just noticed i responded to a 3 day old post. I'm a doofus

that's from UO isn't it?

There's nothing wrong with replying to old posts, especially if they have otherwise gone unanswered. I've even replied to a year old post before.

Never Ending Story?
I am a machinist. I shape reality to my will and call in to existence objects of great power and utility through the use of lathe and mill. Your fucking cell phone, a device that allows you to call upon the wisdom of the whole world would not be possible without people like myself. It all started with some human holding a rock following countless steps and improvements over millennia to bring to you modern technology.
That shit right there is fucking magic.

Anyone know of a game that has great magic, Skyrim is the only one that springs to mind but I spent a massive amount of time in there, bored of it now
