I accept suggestions for edition edition.

>What are startpages?
Startpages (in the context of this thread) are locally hosted webpages (as in, the files are on your computer - not a server somewhere) that serve as the homepage or new tab page for a browser. They generally contain some number of links to frequently visited sites as the main element; search bars, clocks, calendars and other embedded items are usually added as secondary elements.

>What browser are you using?
If you can't tell what browser it is, it's probably Firefox, you can theme Firefox using Stylish and finding themes on the Firefox tag of Userstyles.
Otherwise if you won't upgrade there's always Chrome, you can ~slightly~ customize it using Chrome Theme Maker.

I'm using a modified version of this (http://robyreshy(dot here)altervista.org/) start page with my own links and background color but every time I open it there is like a split second, sometimes longer, where the default page shows up and it's really jarring. I think there is a bit of code left in the config that's doing this but I don't know which ones to remove

How do I use a local image as background with stylish on a site? using a url seems to work.

works: background-image: url('https://www.bing.com/az/hprichbg/rb/RedGrouseScotland_ROW13730566622_1920x1080.jpg') !important;

Doesn't work: background-image:url('C:\Users\Username\Pictures\background.jpg') !important;

just upload the image onto imgur or something

pretty sure you can just use relative directories, so like you have the image in the same folder as the code and just do background-image: url('image.png');

So i came up with this.
It does not change the colors and the random cicle is pretty bad because it could theoretically repeat the same picture infinitely, but it "works" and im very happy with it. Also it change the picture randomly when it loads the page and when you click it.

It's just a CSS animation, but they start conflicting when you have your mouse in the right area due to the way they transition.

The active area for the current expanding link group COULD extend over the nearest 2 groups to help prevent it from happening. I'm just worried about possible side-effects of that.

I think it's time to experiment with that again :D

you should list what you tried already. margin:auto on the urlbar container?
>>
>>6787909
I think you want a couple of layers, with all the animation javascript-driven:
1. Top layer of semi-transparent color bars slowly moving upwards
2. Eyeblink layer, nothing fancy, just an opaque layer of closed eyes overlaying the main image. Have them blink at random intervals, or when poked with the mouse.
3. Main image layer. Leave holes for eyes
4. Eyeballs that move. I've always thought the effect of having them follow your mouse was kind of cheezy, but if it works for you. Otherwise the eyes should just roam around looking at various things on your desktop, or straight at you.
That should give you a startpage you won't get bored with
>>

As part of my startpage rework I'm changing over my weather code, and trying to set up some caching so I don't have to request the json every single time I refresh the page.

I'm thinking I can just encode all the relevant weather data and a timestamp into a cookie, and then as long as the timestamp is within 10 minutes of the current time I'll just read out of that.

Anyone have a suggestion for a better way to do this that doesn't require jQuery or some other libraries? I prefer to use as much of my own code as possible while I'm still learning.

Looks nice, love the color scheme and the font is pretty. The only issue is the contrast between the background and the main box is too small. It looks like it's just text in the middle of black background unless I really increase the brightness of my screen. Maybe lighten the background a bit?

On my screen the contrast is subtle enough so I can see the difference, I had a 'lighter' version of the background image but it was too light in my opinion.

This time around I'll make it with php, and put it on my website so you can login and "create" your own startpage. Got a few friends who would like to use it as well. So for them to be able to make their own groups and links, i made it with a db w/ login and stuff.

How do I set the new tab page in Chrome to be the custom start page that I have? I can only set it as a starting page
>>
>>6792728

Looks fucking lovely mate, Can you share it please.
>>
>>6798605

I cannot wait until you share this, I fell in love with it the second I saw it.
>>
>>6802120

I don't know of another way, but I personally use an extension that redirects the new tab page on chrome.

https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/new-tab-redirect/icpgjfneehieebagbmdbhnlpiopdcmna?hl=en

>>6801532

I seem to be getting the same thing on all the the pages from startpages.github.io

It seems as though the html doesn't load the js/css files. Anyone know how to fix this?

I have a really well organised bookmarks button

Too lazy to remember how to use javascrip to make the wallpaper change randomly, going for a knock off of that lain website.

The symbol is animated but again, too lazy for webm

comparison of my current theme switching (left/right mouse to advance/reverse the current theme) and a mockup of my other idea.

trying to decide if its worth finishing the mockup and implementing it or just keep the current implementation and release it finally.
>>
>>6802193
Made a little headway on that. Sat down and cleaned up the css quite a bit yesterday. Will probably be able to finish it up New Years Eve.

>>6802775
You know a little JS can easily let you switch between search providers in one input?

>>6803258
Wow that's actually really cool. It would be nice to see the mockup implemented into your current page. I think it would work out nicely.

quick update: added search bar. I mostly search from the address bar, but it was an interesting exercise to figure out how that worked anyway, and I think it fleshes out the aesthetic a bit

Amazing mate, I'll keep my eyes open for it then.

Love the theme, wonder how many people here had to Google instead of just knowing what the fuck they were looking at. Probably the same percentage of fgts that have actually read Cryptonomicon compared to those who claim to have.

you'll need darkflat ahoka theme in 4chanx for it to be complete

Anyone know why I can't seem to get my Firefox theme or Startpage to use Haxrcorp in CSS? I'm inserting "font-family: "HaxrCorp S8" !important;" but it just defaults to some sans-serif font
