That scene with the two sentinels always get me because it plays into the motif of antiquity.

You think "why would two huge fucking statues be guarding a passage that rarely sees use?"

Then Aragon explains to the Hobbits that they're kings of old with a sad look of nostalgia on his face.

And you realize that the whole quest that the Fellowship is undergoing is about destroying what was left of the "old" thinking, and bringing Middle Earth into a new age. There are all these examples of antiquated cultures in the movies (haven't read the books in a while). Helm's Deep, the Mines of Moria. Fuck. In a way, Sauromon is just left over from a time of mysticism, and the old ways are being replaced by new ways, for what we hope is better, but possibly not. Much like the modern Western World.

Anon is referring to Sarumon, who is the wizard that Saron manipulated into working against the peace of middle earth. Sarumon used to be the head of wizards, Sarumon the White, but when he went to Saron Gandalf became White.

It used to be correct, up until The Silmarillion. >>6743335 is half right. Elves initially crossed the ocean to reach Valinor, but when the rebelling Noldor returned to Middle Earth, many of them crossed the ice on foot.

However, as of The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings, nearly everything north of the Blue Mountains of Middle Earth is underwater, including the land connecting the two continents.

Fuck no man, did you not see how Jackson's The Hobbit butchered Tolkien's work?
Just leave the franchise alone, Hollywood. Or alternatively, try something non-canon, like making up some story set in the second age or whatever. Just don't touch the Simarillion, it isn't even suitable for a movie much like the Bible isn't.

While yes it is the return of a king with the blood of Numenor flowing through him, but that king is a man. Like you said, the elves are leaving. The future belongs to men to make for themselves. In many ways though, it isn't really a positive or negative ending. One of the themes that runs through Tolkien's work are that time passes, and things change, and nothing ever seems as good as it was but in turn those times never seemed as good as things that came before them. It's the story of the human condition. But there is no going back.

This. We can imagine it could be perfect but it'd have to be stretched out into like maybe 10 movies and the first like two would be relatively slow paced just setting up the world for the rest like the book. That is unless they just cut through the creation of Arda and just skipped straight to Morgoth rising to power which would upset Tolkien fans.

The LotR films may have been an okay balance of staying true to the story and presenting it for the general masses but there's no way to achieve that with a story as epic as The Silmarillion.

no we absolutely do not, if you've ever read the silmarrillion you would know that it does not fit the format of a hollywood movie, and hollywood would be the only place to drum up the funds that it deserves, but if a studio was pumping that kind of money into the project, they would demand a massive hand in the creative process, which would butcher the movie, and any vision the director and production team might have had. We got lucky with the LotR trilogy, but damn w e drew snakeeyes with the Hobbit trilogies, which really only had some impressive battles going for it and that's it. I feel as though the only way you could do it would be in some sort of serial format, like how GoT did for the ASOIAF books.

That could deal with the huge span of time that it covers, but it might have trouble with some of the bits that need the most detail, like Beren and Luthien or Turin/the Fall of Gondolin.

There was so much depth but it wasn't just building a fantastical world just to build a fantastical world. Everything added to the world and shaped the characters in different ways. Like once I read the Silmarillion then went back to watch the extended cut movies, I realized why Elrond had such disdain for Numenor. Tolkien has accomplished something I don't think any other writer will for a good long while and I'm sad he didn't get the chance to do more before he passed away.

Well I'm really bad with sun positions and shit but if I get what you're saying right, your problem is with the timeline?

According to the books, they left Rivendell very soon after midsummer (or on midsummer? man I need to re-read a lot of shit), then went up the mountain which presumably took a few days, got caught up in the golbin caves and got out in about 1 or 2 days, in the evening they were ambushed by the goblins again and saved by the eagles. So yes, this shot does take place less than a couple of weeks after midsummer.

They spent some time at Beorn's and in Mirkwood, a bunch more time sitting imprisoned by the wood-elves, some more time partying in Laketown, and then arrived at Erebor somewhere around the end of summer / beginning of autumn IIRC. Then they spent ages searching for the door, moved camp several times, finally found it, spent more time trying to figure out how to unlock it, and finally Durin's Day came.

If I remember the movies correctly they showed everyone going up to the mountain, immediately spotting the horribly poorly hidden stairs to the door, climbing up, beating their heads against the door for a few minutes then giving up ang getting ready to head back home. That's utter BS.

I might help to know that Tolkein viewed the great evils of modern society as industrialization destroying the English countryside. The Ring is a metaphor for the timeless greed that empowers the leaders of industrialization to obliterate everything good about the countryside and noble traditional culture.
