I didn't set this theme up just to make it look pretty. It's a philosophy, a way of life, a, a discipline, a teaching. Sometimes, you should just need to relax. Do you spend a lot of money on things you don't need? Could that money be spent on someone that it can help even more? Enjoy the present and think about what really matters. Don't be selfish, I didn't set this theme up just to make it look pretty. It's a philosophy, a way of life, a, a dicipline, a teaching. Sometimes, you should just need to relax. Do you spend a lot of money on things you don't need? Could that money be spent on someone that it can help even more? Enjoy the present and think about what really matters. Don't be selfish, look around you and look for people you can help make their day a bit better.

I'm torn on this one. On the one hand, I like the transparent borders on the browser and file manager. On the other, there are a few things here that fly in the face of convention in a way that feels unnecessary. The hambuger menu on the left side, board links on the bottom of the browser. Your file manager also feels...naked. I would kind of feel exposed using it.
I'm gonna rate this one 6.5/10.

>>6714617
Really good browser and home page, but the lack of a cohesive color scheme between the music player and browser is a little unnerving.
5.4/10

>>6714727
You have a great sense of color and composition. You have the potential to lead window-customization culture, and the future of desktop threads somewhere great. When I rate desktops, I try my hardest to find a reason to hate them. Most of the time this is really easy, but I don't see much that I dislike here. I'm going to give you a 9/10 just because the right side is cluttered and makes the screenshot feel uneven.

Everything about your desktop, from the programs you use, to the wallpaper, tells me that you are an average guy. Maybe you haven't been on 4chan for very long and you like what you see. Maybe you only come here occasionally. I can see into your future and you will marry an average-looking woman, have an average-looking family. You will be a middle manager at some company where you make decent money. You will be fairly happy with your life, but you will die knowing that you've only ever done what you thought was considered okay by others. You are a man that needs permission to explore.

What's wrong with mint barring the brief security breach? Honestly one of most stable, working out of the box distro's I have used (and I have used a lot)

I started using Ubuntu a few years ago but I only had laptop at the time and the distro was a bit heavy on it (even with xfce or whatever it's still heavy on a laptop, fuck you). I moved onto mint 15 which for me had heat issues (same laptop). Moved onto Fedora which worked nicely. It ran cool and overall just worked for me however this is before I had a desktop. When I got a desktop that was worth a damn using fedora became more of an annoyance than it was worth (fixing my drivers after every update was real fun). From there a distro hopped onto everything you could imagine (fuck you and your autistic bullshit Arch) before I settled back into Mint which was and is on 18. It worked wonderfully out of the box and customizing wasn't a terrible experience. Once I applied some battery saving features with it on my thinkpad it works pretty damn well.

All of this was just to provide you with a brief history my experience with Linux so far. I have come to determine that you have to ask yourself "what is your time worth to you?" and "what is really secure?". If your time really isn't worth a damn go ahead and spend it building Arch or making your favorite distro work. Nothing wrong with it but I have work I need to accomplish that shouldn't be spent on the functionality of my OS. If you're so concerned about security that you're willing to completely shut out a distro based on one security incident I should hope you are running tails off of an un-writeable (finished) disk or perhaps a highly customized version of puppy from the same configuration.

>Hey, dafuq vendetta you got against Arch? It's not for everyone but it's also just some people's preference. Rolling release and the user repository are pretty good selling points for me. Not mentioning it's lighter than most other if not all other relatable distros.

I agree with these points however if I could actually get it installed I would be able to enjoy these benefits. I pick on Arch because it illustrates my point well. Neither I nor anyone I personally know have been able to successfully install Arch and get to fully functional desktop environment or at least without difficulty. Not to turn this into an "Arch sucks" conversation, contrasting this with the easy install and go with other distros. Again, from my previous post, I need my computer for work and thus need my distro to function with quick install time and low maintenance. I can see how Arch could be fun however I have experienced how it can be a giant pain in the ass that I just don't want to deal with.

>If your time really isn't worth a damn go ahead and spend it building Arch

My installs with Arch usually goes one of two ways:

1. Any guide I attempt to follow does not reflect what I see in my install (as in it behaves differently and won't install because of this).

2. I can't get passed a step in the install process for example I cannot save the partition scheme I have setup and continue.
>>
>>6715659
Arch shouldn't be that hard to install, especially if you follow the instructions and make decisions at certain moments specific to your system. And even then, it does a lot for you. Idk... Try Manjaro.

(arch has been one of the comfier distros I've used btw desu)

It doesn't take a genius level intellect to install Arch. You don't need to install Arch in order to get a minimal system. I have been told that the current beginner guide isn't as good as it was in the past. I can't tell you what step you're missing or not performing correctly. The friendly linux general thread on /g/ may be able to help. But be sure you're exhausting your resources first to not be chewed out for failing to read the manual.

I agree, however the issue is it is that hard to install.

>Idk... Try Manjaro.

Or I could just install Mint and go on with my day which was really the point of my original diatribe.

>>6715683

>It doesn't take a genius level intellect to install Arch.
I agree, it just doesn't work out of the box for me, which was part of the issue.

> You don't need to install Arch in order to get a minimal system.

Didn't say you did.

>I can't tell you what step you're missing or not performing correctly.

Nor can I because what should happen, according to the guides I have attempted to follow, does not.

>The friendly linux general thread on /g/ may be able to help. But be sure you're exhausting your resources first to not be chewed out for failing to read the manual.

Again, the alternative being just installing Mint and being done with the whole thing.

Look guys the issue doesn't rely with technical ability but more with frustration. I am very confident I could solve the issues I have had with Arch but fail to see why I should have to put up with hence what I said about earlier >>6715214 here.

I like Fedora and I could very well fix whatever the updates broke every time, but why should I?

There's clearly valid reasons for using Arch.

>Minimal install size

My question is why don't you understand that like any distro you set it up once? It's not solving problems every day to get things to work. Further why are you shitting on something you are too lazy to use, if you are really satisfied Mint?

Nice, you should be thanking john though
Also, can you share the wallpaper? I don't have that version.

Everyone can spot the new guy in 2 seconds. Your desktop is a disgrace by the way.
>>
>>6713516
I miss these kind of desktops
I was never able to get a grip on how to use one though. Its way more complicated than I thought
>>
>>6716346
it's pretty simple, I had one for a while; I just used dmenu/rofi for running programs, and it's possible that this anon's bar is just hidden
I don't have a top like this anymore because it wasn't easy to make non-terminal programs unify, basically only firefox could do it well

Thats the thing. I suck with linux. Ive used debian, mint, ubuntu, opensuse, and even manjaro. Ive seen people even make mint cinnamon look like that. If there was an actual tutorial or something that could guide me through this instead of a wiki page that explains nothing then I would be happy. But got damn.

Im super comfortable with windows, and Ive tried using Bug.n. Fuck that. LIfestep only runs on 32bit, BBlean was a mess, and emerge desktop was a joke. The most simple solution for me was to uninstall bloatware 10, reinstall windows 7, and play with some VS and rainmeter like this
>>
>>6716370
distro hopping is the stupidest thing
you know any distro can look like anything right
distros aren't about oob appearance
>>
>>6716371
its wasent much about distros as more use of desktop environments tbqh senpai. should have said kde, gnome, xfce, mate and cinnamon
>>
>>6716373
which you can install without reinstalling an os
i.e. you can just install debian and then install kde, gnome, xfce, mate, and try them all
but you know a lot of those DEs are highly customizable, the oob experience isnt telling of the DE
and you don't need a DE, you can just have a wm
>>
>>6716373
>wasent
you're actually pretty dumb huh
>>
>>6713588
Can you post a link to that openbox theme? All I can find are gtk themes for it. Am I just being dumb?
>>
>>6716380
Hey, you cant blame a guy for wanting to try a lot of linux distros and DEs

Any good window manager that doesn't act like bug.n?

>>
>>6716385

i3 is pretty easy, and you can make it look exactly like >>6713516 very easily

>>
>>6716386
bug.n is a literally mess. The whole thing is about creating your own hotkeys from the ground up. With almost no way to get any premade ones. Not only that but every customizeable feature is done from scratch and you have to figure out yourself, no one has given any information on how to do it either.

Ive seen i3 and it looks easier to use. I might give it a try in the near future.
>>
>>6716390
I use i3 on my laptop and it's very convenient. Easy to pick up, too, it got super easy after under an hour or two of just browsing.

What do you think, anons?

These boxes are all direct links to games so I can just load them immediately from my desktop. Except for the middle one, it's just a spacer/slideshow.

Is the menubar an xfce4-panel? Do the file/edit etc actually work?
>>
>>6716574
It is, it's the topmenu/global menu applet and I think it looks really nice, although it's colors are hard to customise, have yet to find a way to change them.
>>
>>6716574
Looks like it. I could never get it to work. It just shows as a solid black bar with nothing on it. But I hardly ever use gui programs
>>
>>6716580
Huh,i must've missed that. And I agree about that, you have to set specific widgets to theme classes in .Xresources or .Xdefaults, a but of a pain

I'm the owner of the screenshot. I'm on 8.1 so I don't know exactly how it goes on 10.

I'm using classic shell. It's all at the settings. Remove stuff you don't need. Just import the icon posted by other anon to change the start button.

As for the taskbar, it's all default. Set taskbar icons to small and choose your desired color via the control panel. Also, hide all unnecessary notification icons. Since you're in 10, the control panel may be a lot different.

For the starmenu to have the same color as the taskbar, take a screenshot, colorpick your taskbar and apply the color into the start menu settings.

The firefox and foobar icons are all custom. Just find them online. To pin your program with the new icon:
>create shortcut of program to be pinned
>view properties of shortcut
>change icon and select new icon
>pin the shortcut to taskbar
>feel free to delete the actual shortcut

I think that's about it.
>>
>>6716198
Could use a better font.
Also you have two clocks, which is frowned upon here. Lastly, your icons stand out too much, replace it with simple icons.

>The hambuger menu on the left side, board links on the bottom of the browser
Actually I don't really mind the hamburger, just thought it was a bit empty so I placed it next to the navigation bar, here a shot without it.
Also I really like the effect produced by the board links on the bottom, don't know why tho.
