The cross is symbolic of Christ's sacrifice, which was harsh. Through its image, we are meant to reflect on that sacrifice. The iconography is not difficult to grasp.

The cross had literally nothing to do with Jesus. Not until close to 600 years AFTER his death.

It is also worth note that the Cross was around as a Pagan and Egyptian symbol (hard to tell which culture thought it up first.) for a few thousand years before all of that.

Also worth note, the idea of Christ dying on a cross is only due to poor translation, in all likely hood he was crucified on something more resembling an uppercase T or possibly even just a large wooden stake. (Like an "I").

Are you referrencing the Egyptian Ankh? That is a different symbol from a different religion.
