None. I got my cert just after getting married and having a kid. Just keeping currency is expensive as fuck, and flying anything needing ratings (complex, high performance, tail dragger, sea/float plane) just adds to the cost of flying... MEL is twice the cost per hour (at least in my area) and with fuel at $4-$5 a gallon, doubles the cost as well.

It's not a cheap hobby, and where I am there's not many options for renting anything that isn't a 172S (although a new club has an S-20 and S-22, but per-hour dry cost is over $200).

Turbo Prop would be fun, but the area I fly out of is pretty... Ancient. Lots of old privately owned planes on the tarmac (some I don't think have moved in over 20 years), but not much in the way of rentals or clubs.

Really... I would just love having a Super Cub jointly owned with my brother in law rather than having to rent. Something nice about just showing up to the airport and getting in your own plane.
>>
>>6659193
I'm getting my Private and maybe want to turn it into a career. Getting my commercial and other ratings. I heard that its pretty competitive and really hard to get a job in aviation. Super Cubs are really nice, I'm learning in a C152 to keep things cheap. I would love to fly a tail dragger eventually

Military pilots tend to dominate the field of commercial aviation (especially helo's). But getting your Commercial or ATP is expensive and a lot of jobs for entry are dominated by the local small carriers (usually contracted through the big commercial airlines, like FedEx, American, etc) for shorter routes on smaller planes, and tragically doesn't pay anywhere near what the job demands.

I've always heard the legend, especially in the helicopter arena, that most pilots are nearing retirement (the influx of pilots to the civilian world after Vietnam was huge), but I've always considered it as a selling point to get people to attend schools for such ratings.

It's competitive for sure, and you won't start off as a Captain of a triple-7, but starting off small and working your way up (say, CFI/CFII to build hours then moving to complex for smaller companies or a local/regional as a co-pilot) can get your foot in the door. Only commercial pilot I know currently is prior USMC. Hell of a way to get a nice job. Government pays for your flight training, get a thousand or so hours in MEL complex, and then move straight to the bigger carriers.

Would you recommend doing military then? I know either way is competitive as hell. But on the other hand most military pilots are required to have a bachelors before getting in, which would mean I have to pay for four years of college. Of course there is student loans and that stuff, but would that be better then going the other route?

There's a lot more factors than just that... Officer life especially is a political game. Depending on the branch depends on if you will get in, and doing what specifically. Army flys very limited number of fixed-wing aircraft, and isn't a great route to go unless you want to fly helicopters (and then it's easier, since they let Warrant Officers be helo pilots).

Air Force flies a ton of planes, and if you're itching to be a fighter... So is every other Lt there. Likely to be on a C-130 or C-17 unless you're really top of your class (and that's Air Force Academy, getting wings coming in as a civilian with a bachelors is even harder).

USMC is almost exclusively combat aircraft, save for the Whiskey Huey, V-22 and some C-130s. They're mostly AV-8b, F/A-18E and AH-1Z Vipers (or venoms. Always get that confused). Navy flies some F/A-18 and Prowlers for the moment, but lots of ship-to-shore planes, like greyhounds or AWAKS. Not much in the way of large planes. MEL is MEL, be it an F/A-18 or C-17... Only way to get stuck as SEL would be to end up in the 35.

But being in the military is a whole other question. Going the military route just to get wings probably isn't the best idea unless you had wanted to be military to begin with. With the reduction of forces, all branches are a lot more picky (and the Air Force has always been the pickiest) about who they bring on-board and for what. I know an F-16 driver in the Air Force, went to school with him. Valedictorian, went to the Air Force Academy and was top of his class to get there. It's certainly not an easier route unless you had been aiming for that for years in high school.

If you want to fly for a living, like I said before, it's going to cost time and money and is very competitive. If you're not already a butter-bar at Pensacola, then the civilian route is likely the best option (I don't know, you could be a high school freshman just starting out and have 4 years to score a military academy appointment).

I'm not the end all for this info. I spent my time in the USMC and it was not compatible with my personality. Granted, there's a huge difference between being enlisted and an officer. My goal was to fly but at the time I was 1.) too short, and 2.) bad vision, so I wasn't going to earn wings that way anyways.

Your mileage may vary. My only major advice would be to avoid Embry Riddle. Good way to get a quarter million dollars of student debt and land in an industry making 30k a year.

I've wanted to join the military for a while, just never knew which one. I know that its a big commitment. Signing the big contracts and some times they will fuck you over (maybe more then sometimes) and you will be stuck with a shit job you didn't want. But it could still pay for college.
I have good vision, I am 5'9. I am decently fit and could definitely keep up in basic. I have a 3.1 GPA in high school, currently on my senior year and I just turned 18. Which is like a B average. I don't even know if that has to do with anything. I feel I would do well in a military environment. The problem is I have never took the ASVAB, I would definitely need a high score to be even considered for a pilot slot. Should I just go talk to one or should I wait a bit until I graduate to talk to one and possibly take the ASVAB?

They will make you take the ASVAB regardless. It's a huge part of what "qualifies" you for certain MOS jobs.I took mine as a sophomore and the scores were still good when I enlisted.

Talking to them now works well. Gives you time to go through the dog and pony show, find an MOS that's right for you, and basically get all the MEPS and such out of the way.

Bit point for recruiters: If it's not written down and you signed it, the promise means nothing. Might not be bad now, but when I enlisted, Afghanistan was a year in, Iraq was 2 months away, and warm bodies were in huge demand.

I eventually turned out 5'9", but not till a couple of years after boot camp, and enlisting at 5'4" put me a couple inches under the height minimums for pilots (jets don't usually come with power seats). Physically I was middle of the pack. Not the strongest or fastest, not the slowest or fatest, which kept me off the radar. Mentally, on the other hand, depending on the branch... 12 weeks of someone screaming in your face for 16 hours a day gets pretty brutal. Basic is designed to break you down then build you back up in the 'image' they want. I resisted heavily and paid for it. I didn't catch on to the "there is no right answer to any question they ask", or in another direction "is there any answer I can give that won't result in more pushups?". I needed to turn my brain off. But that's USMC. Air Force and Navy are very different experiences.
>>
>>6659437
Do you recommend a certain branch? I'm definitely interested in flying. Is there a certain branch that hire's more pilots then other branches?

Owning vs renting is usually a push. Maintenance and other costs of aircraft ownership (like parking fees or hangar if you go that far, unexpected damage or repairs, insurance, etc) usually make it just as expensive per hour as renting.

If you fly a lot, like putting 5 hours + per week, then owning tends to be the better route. Since it's your bird, you don't have to worry about availability of the aircraft like you would renting.

On the other hand, when it goes in for the yearly, you don't have a plane to fly for a few weeks. If you live in a place like I do, that can suck, but other parts of the world, where there's seasons you typically can't get into the air, it's not as bad.

Air Force, by far, as just about everything centers around Strategic Air Command. KC-135s, C-5s, C-17s, C-130s, F-15, F-16, F-35 just to name major aircraft, in addition to the smaller birds they operate, means they are by far in the most demand of pilots. It's just that it's well known and is a main target of those wishing to fly.

That and the Air Force, compared to say... The Army or Marines, is a hell of a nicer environment to work and live in.

SAC hasn't been a thing for a while. In the 90s they dissolved it and broke it up and stood up different MAJCOMS. Air Combat Command, Air Mobility Command, Pacific Air Force, and USAF Europe. (ACC, AMC, PACAF, USAFE)

It was reactivated and redesignated in 2009 as Global Strike Command. AFGSC. They control the ICBMs and Long range assets. Like B-52s.

Just to add my two cents, being a current Commercial, Multi Engine, ATP Certificate holder, I will add that my flight instructor, who was USAF, had to do additional training after he retired, as he was only centerline thrust rated. Us civies who didn't have the jet jockey experience didn't have that restriction. Not a huge deal, just one more thing to think about when you get out. If you want to go commercial, and decide that military is for you, definitely go the cargo route. If you want to be a fighter pilot, you do that as long as you can, then get a career after to carry you to retirement. If you go non military, be prepared to make between 30 and 50k a year for your first 5 years. If you can get in now, do it. All airline pilots MUST retire at 65. Currently, the major airlines are retiring between 250-320 pilots per year, per carrier. In 2020, when the majority of Nam vets start hitting that mandatory 65, that number jumps to 870-930 pilots per year. That is verifiable through several different reporting companies. At that time, there will be a pilot shortage, and the market will change completely. Myself and several others are concerned, because the price of a ticket will skyrocket due to lack of available pilots.

Again, just my two cents, having been in the industry for almost 15 years. Attached is my current project :)

The SR-71 Blackbird was designed as a long-range reconnaissance aircraft. It is one of the fastest aircraft ever built, with a cruising speed of Mach 3 (around 2,200mph). Typical evasion procedures were to simply accelerate, as it could outrun just about everything.
