Are those two separate thoughts, or one? What about it do you find ugly? I don't personally find the artist name useful to me, and I can see the song name text fine, The whole schtick is a little transparency. Other than that the whole background is just the current album art.

The music player can be opened and closed. It hides itself after ten seconds.

I stole this idea from another person so if you are around sorry m8 I just liked how it showed the desktop with out really loosing functionality.

Nope, KLWP is extremely versatile and will allow you to do almost anything you see here, there are a few specific things like notification counters and custom actions that will require tasker, but you will most likely just need KLWP

A custom launcher (Nova, Apex) also helps, along with an icon pack and a good wallpaper. It may not sound like much but to make something that's good, it's imperative to have all the components fit together and for you to exercise real taste; the homescreens here weren't thrown together in 5 minutes (well, not the good ones).

What font is the 'nine' in?

Make the font a touch thicker.
The centre and bottom boxes can be slightly taller; just try bringing down the bottom one to fill that dead space at the bottom of the screen.
The Icons are also too close to the border at the top and bottom, so maybe redo your grid to line them up better.

Those are errors in detail, but the design is good.
