Here's a quick and dirty tutorial on how to do the gray/fade shit to other photos if you want.
Opens up more possibilities for you OP, just in case you have troubles finding exactly what you're looking for.
It also helps to darken the image a bit, and desaturate the colors by a small amount.

I got you OP. You want a cold picture with color almost coming through it. I think the people doing too much grey or too much color don't get it.

This picture is very different looking but the core--cold, lifeless--but with life coming through it is exactly what you want.

I like this one because initially you just think he is pointing but he seems to be holding a gun. Little hidden stories are a common theme among his pics. He has several series of loosely related pics. He originally started with dinosaurs but is more popular with his large tech sci fi pictures. They all have some sort of plot, his latest series focusing on some malevolent infection among his earlier series with bots apparently in northern Europe.
