Ive always wondered, how do you guys manage to extend/fill backgrounds with gradients/patterns?

If it's just a gradient (perhaps the color varies from the top to the bottom, but it's uniform left to right), you select a vertical slice, duplicate it to another layer, then stretch it horizontally.
Vertical or diagonal stretches are also possible.
This sometimes produces "striations" or stretch-marks. In which case you apply a little blur.

Where there's a pattern (I did >>2019863) again you make a selection. In that case, a narrow slice running for the top down to where the slice intersected the blue dress. I duplicated it and slid it to one side so the pattern matched. (I set the merge-mode to "difference" and moved the selection slightly until the overlap was dead black. That ensured a perfect match.)
I could have continued duplicating and moving the slice but that would have taken a very long time.
Instead, I merged the copy back in and took a new slice twice as wide. Repeated the process with a 4x slice, then an 8x, and a 16x.
After reached the edge of the expanded paper size, I copied the pattern downwards to fill the area where the first slice hadn't reached (on account of the dress.)

General procedure clear? I find copying sections yields better results than simply cloning. Less risk of discontinuities.

I guess I just really wanted the image! It was about 3 or 4 IMTs back so it wasn't so bad.

It's still a bit blurry. When I use the original one as my wallpaper, it's all crisp. But the edited one has a bit of a blur to it. I'm sorry, I'm no good when it comes to digital imaging terms.
