>What is minimalism?
Minimalism involves taking images and reducing them down to basic colors and removing most features. Most wallpapers will not include shadowing or faces, but this is subjective.

>Guide to Making Your Own
http://www.deviantart.com/art/Vector-Wallpaper-Tutorial-399883993

>Software
Use either Illustrator or Inkscape (both are free if you know what I mean).

>Requesters
1) Do not post images with incredibly intricate designs, vague or conflicting colors, or undefined edges, these make minimalizing very difficult.
2) Be sure to thank the artist!

>Artists
1) Always upload as at least 1080p PNGs, try and post transparents too.
2) Look over other people's works! We need good criticism if we want to improve!
3) Watermarks/signatures are not highly necessary.

Old thread: >>1984609

Make minimalism great again; please read the above.

>Requesters
3) Remember to also be patient. This is purely voluntary work and it can be weeks (even months) before someone picks up your request.

(couple of things borrowed from the vector thread)
4) Request an image ONCE per thread. Do not bump or second - once is enough.
5) Refrain from using renders (just the character with transparent background) for requests. Try to find the original non-rendered image; it is easier for vectorists to work with.

Time for archive!

https://mega.nz/#!nxo0zKjC!OOzph3buFuqIpkVREcw9fZbIcM0szSghHNo8r_TySkc

We're now at 625 entries. A lot of new faces last thread, thanks for dropping in and giving this a try!

We had an incredible effort last thread and managed to identify all the unknowns! Spectacular!

Depending on the success of the Booru,
>>1995069
this may be the last time I create an archive. If that is the case, I thank everyone for working with me over the years to create this extensive collection. It couldn't have been done without help by both contributors and those who helped identify some of the more mysterious files within.

Please contribute to http://min.booru.org/ if you find the time.

Thanks everyone!

Shizuka. It took a bit longer to deliver than I expected due to some exams.

Any anons have some advice on how to make the legs not look like shit? I didn't have a reference for that part and it looks notably worse than the rest.

>>1996367
>Depending on the success of the Booru, this may be the last time I create an archive.
It still might be worth maintaining the archive anyways, as I don't think there's a convenient way to bulk download from there.

Either way, thanks for everything!
>>
>>1996512
would the vectors on the background version work as a reference, I don't remember the legs looking weird, but then again, that may be due to not looking as closely.
>>
>>1996605
Unfortunately her legs are blocked off a lot by a staff, and the resolution also makes it hard to get the details right. >>>1994295

I had trouble copying it before, but seeing as his looks much better than mine I might give it another go.

I was hoping some anon might have an reference image with a similar pose I could use. I tried browsing pixiv for stuff but 99% of the time stuff is cut off at the thighs.

Kuroko no Basuke - Ryota Kise

One of the requests from last thread.

>>1996367
My thinking behind making the booru was that it might be more convenient for some people to have an online gallery to browse instead of downloading the archive (like if they are on a phone, or are really stingy about memory space). Personally I find the archive you so diligently maintain (great job btw, really appreciate your efforts) more convenient and would be a little saddened if it went away.

But yeah, if anyone can find some spare time to expand the booru, it would be really appreciated. Currently it's got about 1/4 of the archive posted there, just copy-pasting the filename as the image title and rewrite the two parts (source and name) just with underlines_between_each_word_but_a space between_the_two

>>1997093
An orange ball alone should do. That or an orange ball with red ball alone for the iris.
I a bit unsure as to what might end up looking best.

How about 2 versions? I had in mind a "more minimal" vision for what I wanted the final product to be.
One with her with no main eye and just the eyelash above it and either orange circles or red circle in orange for the secondaries, as well as less detail overall for the rest of the image. ie just enough details to accentuate the difference between each eyestalk and her tail.

The other could have all the deails you like like in your image (I prefer the right) in the both the main and secondary eyes and the entire image. It looks like you're having fun editfriend.

If asking for 2-for-one is a bit presumptuous you can just do a halfway between the 2; just make sure to have eyelash-only in the main be a part of that.

Now I say that but it's entirely possible what I have pictured in my head won't actually end up looking good so I defer to your skills and judgement in the end. Like I said through; I'd really appreciate to images to compare to each other.

One last nitpick though: in >>1996939 I feel like her eyelash is missing some "spikes" and seems a little flat.
Anyway thanks a bunch dude and happy minimalizing.

Done with the main body, and since you are the responsive sort with your own idea of what you want (which is kinda rare here), It helps to get more feedback.

This is the level of detail I'll be going for with the rest of the image, then I'll make a simplified version to suit your request. Thoughts on the modified eyelash and whatever else catches you eye. Simplified secondary eyes will probably look fine in a proper minimalism version, but I'll see and determine that when the rest is finished.

Niiice that looks GREAT, it looks like you're really sharpening your craft.

Thoughts:
This looks so good that it makes me question whether I actually want it more minimal, I do, but it looks you're right on track for a great edit. I had concerns that the 'eyelash only' bit might not end up looking too good but now I see I had nothing to fear; looks perfect, no critique.
If I could amend my very first post to mean "if you could provide both a pic with her 'eyelash' only and a pic with the direction you were going in >>1996939 ' appreciate it", the 'eyelash only' look is great, I don't need blankface.
>Simplified secondary eyes will probably look fine in a proper minimalism version, but I'll see and determine that when the rest is finished.
Sounds good, I'll let you determine what to do as you do it. Honestly no clue if I want this picture^ to be more for the less minimal version w/ eye or the more minimal version w/o; again I'll defer to your judgement. (I lack the image editing expertise to make a comment, I think)

Thanks again and look forward to the final product(s).

Little update on min.booru.org
About halfway there, I also made a list of some of the images with either incomplete or incorrect names:

And I got the urge to create minimalism versions of those default counter catgirls, starting with 0
...and me and my inner weeb wanna come up with names for these:
Nulina

I guess Nulina is her proper name and Nu-Nu is her nickname. Yes, it's decided!

Seriously, smart science people can explain pretty much everything with numbers. And those science formulas can be so complex, I wouldn't be surprised if they are hiding magic in there. Greedy science people, hogging all the magic for themselves and just giving us plebs this science and stuff.

(but serious now, the original artist could've drawn it to not look odd that way, but they didn't. And I wasn't gonna try to change the pose, it would've ended up being a mess. I guess I could've tried to find a different image of an anime girl sitting on a block-like object and traced that,, but the style would've been much different and I didn't want to mess with that.

Could I possibly request this minimalized please? If it helps I don't want the entire background either, a basic black would work I just want the window edge and girl if that's ok? Also if you could possibly switch it so that way she's on the right instead of the left too.

If my request seems like to much work or it just doesn't fit, just tell me and I cant delete it

Alright, I've uploaded most of the images from the archive to http://min.booru.org

Some are missing because I either misclicked something during a mass manual upload session or couldn't find the proper name of a mislabeled one and thought "I'll look it up later and then upload" and by next time I forgot. A fresh set of eyes going over it and uploading or just listing the missing ones would be greatly appreciated.

Still 600+ is pretty damn solid, I'm glad to be one of the contributors and be able to actively witness the growth and development of these threads.

Yup, 12 versions in that link is probably the most I've ever done, at least with vector projects and proper use of layers makes that super easy

Heard back about Yurika's, apparently it was based on the anime concept art and edited to add the other staff and wings in, so I think it's sort of based on this one, but with her leg and arms changed slightly.

I figured that was probably the case, thanks for confirming it. Sorry for not for not posting anything recently. I've been super busy with university.

I've got Sanae-San done, but I've made a bunch of changes I should probably explain. First of all, her hair went from purple->orange to better reflect how she looks on the cover of LN volume 11. The yellow jacket didn't look good with the new hair color, so I adjusted it to a green to match the LN cover. Also, I noticed on the original art that it shows her right leg being bent at the knee, despite the minimalist version extending out fully. I tried to adapt the pose to be a bit more faithful art. Let me know if you'd rather me change it back.

I still suck at drawing legs, but practice makes perfect I guess.

Here's Kiriha. I changed the light-orange to white to better reflect the character design in LNs/Anime. I did this pose since it was easier and I had a few concerns about the pose in the original. Based on what I can see from the character design (https://u.nya.is/nibfsr.png), the sleeves don't just taper off. Additionally, the left sleeve extends out defying gravity; it should drape/fold over itself to look a bit more natural.

Based on the way I did the layers, it wont be a lot of work to change to the pose in the original wallpaper. But I know I'll spend ages agonizing over the way it looks, so I'll come back to this one after I've finished the rest so I don't delay them too much.

Can you not directly export it as a gif to avoid the compression fucking with the quality? Or is there a setting in the admin panel that lets you at least turn the counters into jpgs?
>>
>>1999832
No, inkscape doesn't support exporting as gif.
The counters need to be .gif, can't change that.
However, I just added a white background layer and re-exported each png and I think the gifs now look slightly better. I don't know if there's anything more that can be done, but I'm open to ideas.

Aside from changing them into gifs before you upload them, and making sure they're within the filesize requirements so they don't get fucked with on upload, I don't think there's anything else to be done.

Oh cool, I didn't realize anybody had actually picked that up!

That's great, just a couple things to upgrade them to perfect:

Those little 'wing' things that stick out at the bottoms are clips for the helmets and are only visible because they took the pictures of them sitting on a table instead of being worn, so if you could get rid of them that would be great.

And if it isn't too much trouble could you upgrade (downgrade?) the minimalism just one more step to add some defining lines? Just a couple examples: The trunk on the black ranger helmet and the pteradactyl's head outline on the pink ranger.

And if you could upload them individually to the booru rather than the group shot that would be super cool.

https://archive.nyafuu.org/w/thread/1972537/
https://archive.nyafuu.org/w/thread/1984609/
(for context for some of these)

Also it's a good idea to occasionally check the vector thread >>1999542
I learned a lot from there and they are very helpful (being polite helps get polite-ish answers)

And it's good to refresh on some less used skills, just because something seems like it doesn't relate to minimalisms doesn't mean that's the case. Practice makes perfect, but knowing some extra stuff can lead to finding neat little tricks and make vectoring more efficient. I doubt I'd be able to churn out those 10 catgirls in less than 2 days if I hadn't worked on more complex stuff like this (kinda lewd) http://fav.me/dalc7y0

I know everyone here has their own priorities and allotted time and such a level of commitment might be unfeasible and that's okay. Now i'm just rambling, I get wordy sometimes, I'll stop.

Rather nice, I'll need to try my hand at lined minimalisms at some point. Your lines look a little wobbly here and there, and somewhat inconsistent where it seems like they should have same thickness, but overall it feels intentional. Although I prefer to use sharp tapers, rounded ones give it a more comfy/toony vibe (the proper word escapes me).

Yeah it does, using the curvature tool. I was using the pen tool which makes straight lines that you can then turn into curves. I went back in a figured out how to use the curvature tool with out it buckling(?) when making a sharp turn like in between the hairs. In the picture the left one was made using the curvature tool and right was with the pen tool. Not perfect but better.

Hard to tell how exactly you're doing due to low res and aliasing, but it seems you're on the right track. The fewer nodes used the better generally.

I said I'd tinker with line minimalism. This is where I ended up. I'm not super hyped about drawing lines, so I turned this into a different kind of exercise: all lines are 2 point, don't overlap, and only handles of one node are used. So aesthetics took a bit of a backseat. Here's the svg if you don't believe it's that simple:

bump-de-dum, sometimes I feel people forget or skip over old untaken requests, and it appears we potentially have some new contributors, so allow me to go over those:

>>1997119 already pretty minimalistic, though the bumpy/hand-draw-like shapes annoy me

When Carionto says to mess with the colors to make them "more contrasting", please be aware that you can ignore him because he likes to ruin shit by making it all neon.
>>
>>2004505
Yes, very true, though I am trying to be more aware of it.
A better thing to say would be what I was criticized for to check values so that everything doesn't blend together. It might just be my eyes, but in that image the hair and skin are basically one at a quick glance.
>>
>>2004506
You're not wrong--the skin tone and hair color are very similar--but when you change a waifu's hair color or shirt color or whatever to be more saturated in an image with so little detail to begin with it can really start to make them look like an entirely different character.

Minimalism is pretty much just colored blobs as it is, to then change the colors so drastically really hurts recognizability.
>>
>>2004507
I believe you just articulated one of the causes for my deviation from canon colors - in my brain I want something specific and if it moves away from the source I sometimes let myself. Not too drastically for requests - those I do try to stick close to request image or good references, but my own projects - if I think yellow looks better than red, or a tanned skin is nicer here, then I'll go for it without second thought. I just care about pleasing the part of my brain that decrypts colors and shapes, and if I recognize the characters then that's a bonus, not the main point.

This probably explains why >>1998567 is one of my favorite images I've done. She has no name I can find (I think she is an OC anyway), the pixiv artist I believe I found to no longer exist.

So I manged to find a CSS rule that scales the width to browser size, but I have no idea how to, for example, make something like these options appear. Would scaling to height be better? I'm afraid to start doing anything that's not direct copy-paste as I have terrible experience whenever I try to "fix" something on a root level. Essentially the CSS can scale to em's IIRC and percents, which are better than flat px due to scaling, so you're going to need to work on something like

image {
width:20%;
height: auto;
}

It's pure trial and error when it comes down to it, but it shouldn't ruin anything.
>>
>>2004892
>>2004649
You'd want to use the max-width and max-height properties on img tags, so something like

img {
max-height: 80%;
max-width: 80%;
}

That'll mean that an image will only be able to take up 80% of the vertical or horizontal space given to it, whichever is smaller, and won't distort it, or change it if it already fits.

The image when saved will still be the full size image and everything, I think the smaller images is some kind of plugin possibly, because I don't think you can do it with solely CSS because it doesn't download the full size image originally.

If the post images have a specific class or ID, you'd want to use that instead with a . In front for class, or a # for ID

What does /w/ think of the program called Vectormagic? I just used it for the first time and I think it does some damn nice work.
Not as minimalistic as you would do manually.
>>
>>2005288
If I remember correctly, the way it converts images requires a fairly good quality source image for it to be less work than just tracing in a proper vector program.
You can't edit nodes once it converts the image, just change their color and delete, right? To change shapes I remember having to go back a step and edit the individual pixels. This was ages ago so I might be totally off.
I guess if you need a fairly clean-cut image converted to vector format with options to select number of/change colors it is fine, but for proper editing/changing the style I think it would be more effort than normal. Also poor quality images would just be a mess I tihnk.
Generally I feel biased against auto-tracers, as at this point it's just easier for me to do it manually, but if it does what you need it to and you like the results, then all the power to ya
>>
>>2005294
Well, if you were to vectorize a photo, it'd look pretty awful, but I found it does good work on logos and drawn annie may girls. You still edit with pixels, yeah, but can save as .ai, so I can just edit the vectors more there.
Manually vectorizing does look better, I can't deny
>>
>>2005288
Vectormagic is brought up in the /w/ vector threads every so often, and anybody that frequents them can tell you everything that program outputs is painfully obvious as machine-generated and not manually drawn by a vectorist that has any idea what they're doing.

Like Carionto said, if it's "good enough" for your use by all means use it, but the threads here are maintained by people who put hours and hours and days and weeks into images, so that program isn't nearly up to our quality standards.

How do you guys trace the curves so perfectly? I'm on my 2nd attempt and it's still pretty jagged to look at.

Mind posting a screenshot or something?
You don't need a lot of nodes, only a few at key points.
Change them from corner nodes to smooth nodes, then adjust the curvature manually.

like they said, use as few nodes as possible and turn the ones you have to smooth ones (there's a button for that)
The tutorials in >>1996318 and >>1996331
should help (if you haven't checked them out yet) and you can watch me make one (albeit sped up) >>2005255

Can someone do Sonora???
>>
I noticed that the >>1996318 hasn't really been updated much since #3 (2 years ago) https://archive.nyafuu.org/w/thread/1751985/
and we've had some additions like video guides, the booru and some other things I may be forgetting.

So I was thinking that the next one could look something like this: https://pastebin.com/BKcbrHyk

Thoughts? Feedback? Because I'll simply post something like >>1996331 again, and why not just consolidate some of it into the OP?
>>
>>2006973
what if someone made mutiple or a single pastebin full of links to tutorials and tips

Would someone please do a minimal version of this? Just the girl and the dove, please, and a transparent would be great. Thanks in advance!
>>
The nice folk from the DA minimalist group shared quite a few vectors for the archive and booru:
https://mega.nz/#!KYlXFIqY!ZNpwHInhSiZK9NfUYY30m-Q7mTh6MNcughctJ2t8Qcw

There's over 300 images there and some might be duplicates of existing ones (a few also have incomplete names), but that's still a big addition. It'll take a little while to upload all of them individually since mass upload doesn't work (it'd be nice if some people could volunteer parts, like all images from a to c, or something like that)

So I come to these threads every so often to check them out, and I've been wondering a lot recently: does my guide in the OP still get used, or is it just kind of there because it's always been there?

I'm wondering how helpful people still find it when they're learning. I guess I should clarify in case it wasn't clear that I am the guy that made the guide.

It's pretty good, good idea to start with something simple. I can tell you've been pretty conservative with nodes (which is good - the fewer the better in most cases), you've got a solid grasp of layering (and no transparent seams between objects - yay! that's a fairly common flaw we see from newcomers)
Two things I noticed: the neck probably should be a smooth curve; and the legs wouldn't blend into a curved line where one passes behind the other (at least I don't think, not super familiar with pokemon or their "biology"). They would cross and form a sharp point.

Otherwise, well done and I look forward to seeing more from you. If you need more advice scroll through the thread - there's plenty of guides, critiques, etc., and we're here to help answer anything else.
I'd suggest you try something a bit more complicated next, that will more clearly show what your current limits are.
>>
>>2008302
Thanks!, i tried to use the fewer nods possible, in the legs i created a shape and then i cut it out with another, should I have done it differently?

That's fine too, it's just my opinion that that intersection should be a sharp point instead of a rounded one.
I would do pic related - there's a handy button (at least in inkscape) to change the fill rule to non-zero instead of leaving holes if the path self-intersects
>>
>>2008354
yeah that definitely looks better, i just downloaded illustrator yesterday so im not very familiar with it. Maybe at night i try making another
