I mean with window borders you're losing about 6 pixels on each side at the max. Tiling seems to be a lot more of a problem to me, especially since it makes resizing a pain in the ass

if you want floating windows in i3 you probably need to set it to floating mode. (on awesome -wm that's mod4-space)

With the default i3 config, floating is shift+mod+space. It won't be tiled in any such way though. If you wanted tiled with gaps, i3-gaps would let you do that.
