You could space out the nodes more, but yes, its tedious. Since it's a solid background, you could also use magic wand with refine edge and then clean up the nooks and crannies with pen.

Magic wand is tricky, but with refine edge the results should look like pen tool if the background is solid. Pen tool for everything else.

If I'm doing it for myself and/or have the new background already, I'll try using one of the faster selection tools because I can see the edges on the new background right away and touch them up as needed.
If I think I'll re-use the image in the future, or it's a request and I have time, I use the path tool in GIMP to select and then color to alpha and alpha curves to remove the background. It's just as time consuming as the pen tool in PS but I like the results more.

Whatever method you use please be sure to add a solid black layer under the character before saving to check the edges for spots you missed, but remove it after of course.

For images with a dark outline on a white background, which is fortunately a lot of the ones I render, there's a nice time-saving technique that gives results very nearly as good as doing everything by hand.

First do a magic wand selection, then grow the selection enough to get it *inside* the outline in most places. Optionally feather the selection a bit, then do Color to Alpha. Finally, touch up manually as necessary with the brush tool in Color Erase mode (that's a Gimp thing that does the same as Color to Alpha, not sure what it's called in PS).

And I definitely second the advice of >>1974784 to put a contrasting background underneath while you work on it.

Figures. I never got around to looking for this and it actually exists.
The last time I looked for something comparable to color to alpha for PS there wasn't anything built in. There is an old plugin that's supposed to do something similar, but I never tried it.

I just use the default settings. In my experience you'll need to manually fix high-detail areas no matter what settings you use, if you want good results.

Color to Alpha does what it says on the tin: it turns a color to alpha (transparency). For example if you select white, then the white component of each pixel in your selection will be converted to transparency.

That means pure white pixels will become totally transparent, black pixels will be left untouched, and stuff in-between will become partially transparent.

It works best on images with a dark outline on a white background.

Greetings. While keeping Triangle Dandy in the centre just the way he is, I would be ever soo grateful of is someone could expand the blue background along with the inverted purple triangle patterns in order to reach a new dimension of 2040x1148. I would use it for my desktop background. It is not necessary to downscale the finished result into 1920x1080 but if that is possible without quality loss i would be more than delighted. I think it looks pretty good, and I think it was smart to do away with the frills at the edge of the skirt. Definitely looks cleaner.

Well I figured the front of the skirt doesn't have it, so I don't know why it was ever added in the first place. It would have been nice if I could have retained some of the more natural flow of the skirt, but it was beyond my skill. Pleated skirts do tend to be on the stiffer side through. Definitely a lot more than could be done with it, but I hope it'll suffice for now. Cheers

I think that the original image does have a little bit of the skirt frills in it, but I don't think that they are essential. What would you suggest doing to it in the future that would make it look more natural?

This picture came from this mousepad design, and I have had to recreate the cropped portions of the image. I could never find the full image that would, it seems to me at least, have to exist to be put on the mousepad in the first place.

I see. I thought the frills were odd because the front part of her skirt doesn't have any, but taking a closer look at her design online, it seems like she has a two layered skirt with frills. Either the artist didn't draw them in the front, or they are rolled up out of sight due to her position.

As far as I can tell, draw it better, because it's outside my understanding of the way clothing falls naturally. Something about how the skirt hugs around the leg and drops to the ground just isn't quite right. I used this picture as reference, but it still not the same.

I have a couple anime screenshots that I want to print on some merchandise. Fabric to be exact. Would I just request a resize here? or would I have to get them vectored at the vector thread for decent quality merch?

That's too vague a question. We'd have to see an image.
However, I'd start by checking with your printer as to the number of dots/inch of his equipment and multiply that by the height of the desired image to get the number of pixels tall your artwork should be.
Use Waifu2x to blow up your original to _at least_ that size. Larger is better up to twice the number of pixels. It might have to be doubled several times.
Make a test print, preferably at full size, and decide if it looks OK.
You shouldn't have to be reminded that if you're printing stuff for sale, you might face legal problems unless you've gotten authorization.

If you HAVE gotten authorization (or even if you haven't), see if you can get better source-material.
Screenshots are rarely of usable quality.
Many people on this board refuse to touch them, feeling the result is not worth the effort required.

You still have to do what I suggested.
Compute the pixel-dimensions as it will appear on the fabric and Waifu2X (http://waifu2x.booru.pics/) it to at leas that size.
You're the only one who can decide if it's "good enough".
Try to set your own printer to the DPI the fabric printer will use and make a paper test-print.
You may have to crop and print only a section if the full output would be too large for your printer.
