Picked this series back up again after dropping it during the tournament arc, I was really surprised by how good it's gotten. Some of the recent fights have been really fucking good, especially the fight between Goku/Trunks and Black/Zamasu.

I feel like Super stumbled for a while trying to pull some nostalgia cards that it didn't need.
In a way, the first three story arcs have been precursors to the Zamasu arc(in the same way that the Other World Tournament and Great Saiyaman were a precursor to the Majin Buu arc). Those precursors served a purpose though. The tournament established the hierarchy of the Kaioshins and Saiyaman established Mr. Satan, Videl, Goten, and Trunks' significance.
The problem is that the Golden Frieza arc was completely pointless and served no purpose in the long run. The U6 Tournament was mostly inconsequential too but they shoehorned in a connection by having one scene where Zamasu watches Goku's fight with Hit.
