Tried my hand at doing >>1961654 myself, in GIMP.
Followed the instruction in the pastebin:
select with fuzzy and lasso
Grow by 0.5
Feather by 1
Delete
I tried grow by 1, but that turned out even worse. What am I doing wrong? Using GIMP?

There's no rigid formula, "Feather N pixels"
Depends on the drawing. The important thing is to place image over a contrasting color background so you can see what you're doing.
I magicwanded the main areas, expanded 1 and feathered 1.
I could see that would wipe out some of the thinner hair strands so I restored those areas.
Now all those little nooks and crannies will have to be cleaned up manually.
Zoom in and erase with a tiny brush. If jaggies appear, set the eraser to partial transparency.
Remember, you have an UNDO so you can afford to experiment.

Against a solid background I think I see what you're talking about.
Paler aura, right?
I think they're semi-transparent pixels. The background was originally white.
You grew your selection by 0.5 and then feathered 1
Try growing 1.0 before feathering. See if that solves the problem.

Incidentally, at the far right, you can see white jaggies around the loose hair strand.
That's one of the areas I said still needed trimming because the strand vanished if I cut too close.

I have a project that I hope someone can take on.
In the end it'll be powerlevel image we can all use for spice and wolf.

So I'd like the apple to be separated and reconstructed where Holo's arms and sack will be removed, along with the area behind tiny lawrence. Does not have to be rendered yet. Then, I'd like some wheat from other picture to be added behind the apple, like a simple flower arrangement. When that's done, please add some wheat seeds scattered on the imaginary ground under the apple.

because PS doesn't (afaik, feel free to correct me) have an equivalent to GIMP's color-to-alpha feature, which is extremely useful for masking. if you want to mask something that is black-bordered shapes on a white background, in GIMP you can just select the background, grow the selection to cover the antialiased region, and use color-to-alpha and the white will be gone without modifying the black areas shape at all. whereas what the pastebin describes (just cutting the region outside) will also cut off pixels from the border.

the hard work of making a good mask is the same in both programs (and that's what takes the majority of the time) but if you have a good mask, color-to-alpha can give much better results in many cases because it preserves edge detail.

here is a basic tutorial i have made. perhaps it will explain.

using pen tool does work great for masks but it will still cut off part of the border (see bottom of tutorial), it just will not create aliasing like wand does. but no matter how you created the mask cut will always remove some of the border in the process. color to alpha does not, so pen tool -> color to alpha can give better results then pen tool -> cut if done correctly.

because you ignored step 0 and did step 1 first, anon. also note that you should use alpha curves a bit (see right side of step 2 for instructions). since the background color isn't perfect; there will be artifacts (especially after upscaling) that the curves get rid of.

there is indeed slight aliasing in the legs, but it's not too bad. i used jpeg version from waifu2x on accident (don't do this! use png!) so that is most of the reason.

at which step do you diverge? perhaps you are downscaling using lanczos?

I did it again and took a closer look comparing it to the one you posted. They are quite similar now.

I don't know if it was the downscaling method.
Did you use the magic wand tool to make the inital selection? What threshold value did you use? I imagine you had anti-aliasing enabled but not feather edges.

in this case the select by color tool (looks like finger) is much more effective than wand for selecting background, since it is flat color image where the background color is not used in the main figure.
so i used that. one click on background and all is selected! very nice
using antialiasing (i think it is checked by default), yes.
i am glad that it was helpful.
i don't know about threshold. i just click and drag on canvas with magic wand or select by color to change the threshold until it is how i want. much better than typing numbers into a box, since it updates instant.

I don't know what you were trying to do with the wings. Make them transparent or just cut them out?

I figured something like this could be done with color to alpha in Gimp so I made this, albeit rather quickly and sloppily.

If you want to do it differently, follow >>1962641 instructions.

When you do the wings, you have to add color to the white highlights or they will end up completely gone as they are white. I used a blue but messed up the top wing a little, it isn't as transparent as the others.

If you were just trying to cut them out that's much faster to do.

There was stuff on the left and ride border too but I didn't see the bottom. No idea why it was there. I'm trying to use gimp color to alpha now so maybe that was why.

I didn't notice the original image was only 72px/in. so the edges came out like that. I tried to fix it a bit.

Also I noticed a spot by the hair that should have been transparent.
