Post your vector requests and recently done vectors here.

READ THE OP BEFORE POSTING!

>Before requesting, here are some tips:
– Request an image ONCE per thread. Do not bump or second - once is enough.
– Check the lists below to see if your request has already been previously fulfilled.
– All requests are welcome, within reason, but remember:
– The poorer the quality of an image (in resolution and drawing ability), the less likely it will be picked up. The more detail seen and higher the resolution, the better.
– Full-body images preferred. Images cut off on 3 or more sides are very unlikely to be picked up due to their limited usage; keep this in mind when finding an image to request. (Hair or skirt edges that are barely cut off don't usually count)
– Requests for removing the background from an image (called a RENDER) and resizing requests should go to the IMT threads.
– Refrain from using renders for requests. Try to find the original non-rendered image; it is easier for vectorists to work with.
– Note: Overly complicated images are unlikely to be picked up due to their nature. IF your request is taken, please have patience.

Noted a few things on the attached image. Main things you wanna fix are the eyes, her breast line that wasn't masked and her navel that's missing. Don't forget to export your png with a transparent background.

I'd also fix the coloring. I've left some colored circles you can use to pick from for your palette. Color picking directly from the template your are using for your lines won't always give the best result. You want to pick from an image that has very normal colors/ isn't affected by abnormal lighting like night time or sunset for example. The reason for that is that it might be fitting in the context of the original image but you are cutting the character out of it and potentially, you or someone else making a wallpaper, will be putting it into a new setting. Try finding official art that has good colors or even fanart can do.

>>1951944
If I have to pick, I'll choose Akiha for now.

Ok so i tried fixing everything you said Dekodere. The colors look a lot better now but the light hair color you suggested looked more grayish than brown so i kept the old one. I tried making the navel from another picture , is this how it should look like?
Thank you for all the help.

Okay, that's cool. Was hoping you'd pick Hisui and Kohaku, because I could then share it with a friend of mine and make her very happy, but an ojou-sama is fine too. Can't wait to see the finished product.

Should've just said so, I don't mind doing either, I just won't do Luvia because of the pattern on her gown. If you prefer that one, that's the one I'll do then.

Curious if you guys have pro tips for doing vectors of fine pen drawings. Specifically shadow lines, the black ones in this cape are a good example.
Places where the ink runs out and a line fades away into dots are something I'm wondering about as well, look at his armpit for an example.
>>
>>1952980
To be honest: just trace the shapes as they appear.

The only thing you might want to do, since you're not working with real pen, is remove some of the stroke terminations as bulb or dead-stops, and do tapers, just like you would any other anime trace...

There isn't much else to tell you - try literal traces on everything then, if it looks off, hide that layer, and play around with the areas you don't like on another layer, until yo get something that looks nice.
>>
>>1952980
You can search Google for fill/brush pattern manga tones. It's still gonna be a chore tho
>>
I'm really surprised there aren't more requests for current season girls. I guess this isn't the most exciting season for anime.

No offense but a render of the original image is going to be better
>>
>>1954005
Better than that auto trace sure, it would look really good as vector though since it does not have a really odd style that would be lost in a vector. Huke's work, for example, would not look as good vectored because of the watercolor look it has.

>>
>>1954233
That's not really a rule just a suggestion for what is likely to be picked up.

I actually disagree a bit about the image its more interesting to look at then the normal portrait since the coloring/shading and the expression and hands lend a little interest to the image. The actual framing and angle is uninteresting however.

Its a super generic looking character and that also does not help.

I guess I am just saying that people are going to ask for portraits and beating them on the head about it is not going to help there be less posts so we might as well just ignore them.
>>
>>1954252
I don't disagree, I just said they were less likely to pick it up because of this. I was just setting a level of expectation for them from the get-go.

Hey guys, this is not a vector request, but a question for those experienced in creating them.

Do you think a complete beginner (eg. just finished the youtube tutorials) could turn this sketch into a vector? I want to give it a try, but I'm not sure how feasible it is. Could I get some opinions?

Thank you very much
>>
please
>>
>>1954845
The lineart is fairly clean and easily visible, so doing the lineart would be fine. Adding the colors and shading is something you would need to know on top of vectoring to fully color it, but if you know how to do it, it is possible within a vectoring program.

I like your work! No worries about the wait, I'm just grateful you kept working on it.

I've got a few mostly small (I hope) suggestions if you don't mind, marked on the attached picture. (It's all stuff I should've noticed before, though, so sorry about that.)

-The shadowy backside of the torn skirt seems to missing, marked by the green circle/green line
-The hole in the cardigan should be transparant I think, marked by the red circle
-The nose seems to missing some shadow, or is that a conscious choice?
-I notice that I never specified it, but would it be asking to much to make a version with greyish black hair (as on the tiny sample)? The scan I gave you really does make her hair look rather dark brown, but canonically it's supposed to be black and I like the black hair/brown eyes combo better myself.
-Lastly, there's the blue line, but I'm rather unsure about that. Looking at the head I get the feeling the left curve should maybe be a touch more subdued to make the parting of the hair look a little more symmetrical? However there's a risk I might backpedal on this since it's just a vague hunch... So if you don't feel like fiddling with it because of that, I wouldn't say anything if you just left it as it is.

That's all from me. Looking forward to the polished final version!

Looks awesome! I don't know about you, but the black hair version really fits her much better in my eyes.

The only thing left would be to kind of "bend" those two strands of hair on the left side a little, so they follow the more subdued curve. Do you know what I mean? I think then it should be perfect.

If you'd upload the ai for me, that'd be wonderful!

W-Well, if you invite me like that, I actually do have another request idea. But it would probably be more labour-intensive in several ways. Anyway, how would you like this picture? Same series again and the same general idea, i.e. girls standing and posing with firearms. As you can tell, I really like this sorta stuff.

In fact, this one is of my all-time favourites. But unfortunately and unlike my Ibara scan, the original picture is very small and therefore has only very limited use: https://a.pomf.cat/cdhzja.png
I had to put it through waifu2x to be able to attach it to this post, and I'm not even sure if you'd be able to work with such a small picture at all. But if it is possible, that'd be my request. If it's not possible, well then I'll have to live with it.

Of course, I'm prepared to patient. You're a great guy for even offering another go. I expected the polite thing to do would to be to wait before asking the thread for another vector, much less the same person.

I wish I could provide you the artwork in proper high resolution, but it's just impossible to get your hands on it if you didn't preorder the japanese Blurays back in 2013. If that means it can't be turned into a vector, then it's just tough luck.

First of all, you didn't exactly pick the best picture for this. A lot of the finer details are very sketchy which makes it harder to translate into vector format through the pen tool. Also, the fact that it's cutoff on 3 sides will make it very hard to use, unless you planed on doing all the characters.

Next, you used a lot of blurs on objects that didn't need them, like the cracks in her glasses, the blood and the highlights on her hair and plugsuit. Only place where I'd say the blur is appropriate is on her eye for the glowing effect.

The lineart has a bunch of issues. Her mouth is supposed to be opened a bit and you also have an issue with your anti-aliasing. My guess for the aliasing problem would be that you used the default color swatches when you opened your .ai file. You always want to delete those swatches and make you own since they seem to to have a weird white band going around the shapes which also messes up the anti-aliasing. If the aliasing still isn't fixed, make sure you are exporting using Type Optimized.

Lastly, since you picked the colors directly from the image, I'd recommend keeping the bright red background, it'll also help the eye's glow effect.

unless blood is a smear or a spreading stain, keep the edges of blood sharp.

Deko was right about the blurs in other places. If anything, with a plugsuit, it is a rubbery fabric, thus, it is going to be glossy and sharp for thr hilights. Look at some Asuka cosplays for examples - mainly because there are more images of asuka cosplayers in latex/rubber plugsuits that there are of mari.

Hope that helps...

Just saw this, Looks pretty good for a first attempt, main thing I see is is you are use a few to many points in some places, but that comes with practice.

Do a few more vectors and ask for critiques and we should be able to give a better critique.

All in all very nice work.

Also Thanks for the compliment on the tutorial glad you liked it.
>>
>>1955914
It looks like you don't have a great handle on using the pen tool and are using to many points.

The way you are trying to do the hair is much to complicated for the way the image is drawn and the amount of detail so the first thing I would suggest is simplifying the image, ask yourself "do I need this point? Can I do this simpler?"

Another thing you are doing is trying combine your lines and you should make the lines separate and overlap as needed.

Not at a place where I can create some examples for you but I'll see if I can later when I get home unless someone does it for me.

The file:

http://www.mediafire.com/download/8lgj3bui7n7ndg3/1470506077335.ai

If you look at it (I only did portions of the hair) you'll see I used several techniques in this picture. The complex one is for you to figure out HOW I would make this look nicer.

First, is the first lock of the bangs: Here (for simplification purposes, mind) I used two individual lines that had a start and an end to define the hair lines. It makes it look delicate as hell, and I like this style myself, but it is a bitch to get right, and even more of a bitch to color.

Second: staying at the top of the head, I made two wisps of hair. The way I made them, was to make the first like the lined for the bang, but extens it into the head/body, and then slice off using the pathfinder tool, and object I put above it. The one below was used in standard "make four points(fourth closes) object then make the levers parallel.

Third: middle of head, above the complex one: I found the points where the hair would make an "overlap" and made an individual "lock" of hair. I then made all the lines parallel, then adjusted them until I was happy with the look.

Final: This is how the one above it started, but not as complex. The same principles of making the levers parallel to each other applies, but remmeber: this doesn't mean that the handles' lengths have to match up perfectly, either. I find making inner handles smaller makes a better curve personally, and some keep them as if they converted strokes - it's all a matter of flair, once you are used to the tools.

I suggest for now, until you are more comfortable with the tools, to "stay in the lines" and make your lines a bit more "precise" with how parallel the handles and levers are, and then as you get experience, you can work like daul or I do.

Another suggestion to help you control the handles better: Make "two point" circles and eggs for an hour or so using all NSWE points...
>>
>>1955995
ran out of characters. to continue: This will help you understand how the handles move and match together. If you make a circle with the noded north-and-south, make the next, east-and west, then do south and north, then west and east, where the node listed first, is the one you start from to make the circle and/or eggs.

also: don't mind I skipped some of the hair with the bang example - again, I was trying to show a technique off more than follow it true-to-art.

Alsdo remember that some lines cannot be transferred true-to-art, and you're better off fixing them for curve smoothnesses, etc. then keep them in, as larger sizes WILL make them look uncannily wrong.

Also: try fixing that complex one using the parrallel nodes suggestion I gave like in the tutorials, and it will help you get a better feel for the technique overall.
Hope this helps...

Thank you for the detailed responses guys, I really appreciate you taking the time out to help me. I've never been a very creative person unfortunately, so this is alien to me.

Also, I have to ask - how can you tell that I am using too many points?

Thanks again, and all the best
>>
>>1956127
It's fine to not be creative, the secret of art is that anyone can do it. It's just the people that keep doing it ie practice that get good at it.

Also we know you are using to many points because your Lines are really lumpy, for the most part the fewer the lines the better. Also watch the tutorials
>>
>>1956117
Which one?
>>
>>1956062
Your line thicknesses are all over the place. I'd concentrate on making them a lot more consistent.

Again: It is recommended that, until you are more comfortable and know exactly what you are doing, you'll only get yourself into bad habits....
>>
>>1956085
>I'll try to make the blood looks clearer
Make that sharper - clearer almost makes it sound like you're going to make it more transparent...
>>
>>1956204
I trailed off wrong. what I meant was if you don't learn to fix the lines and the why to making the lines more consistent, that bad things will happen, regarding your habits...
>>
>>1956142
I thought he meant the elaborate kimono one...
>>
>>1956062
Okay. I was going to circle things to try to help you a bit more, but really, EVERYTHING is so all over the place, it's not possible.

The ONLY line with any consistency is in the headband, below the gold disks, and that still has problems with it.

Some things to do:
* Make all your nodes and handles parallel to each other.
Clothing (except ribbons) usually dont' end in sharp points - expecially frilly areas. You have blockiness in your lines on our left (her right) of the dress - the very first line we can see of the dress.
* For consistency and sanity sake: assign different thicknesses to things, to help give more body to the image - example: ribbons should be thicker than hair, but not thicker than clothing. Hair should be your thinnest line, and things like puffy vests, thick leather or boot soles should be thick.
* Mechanical things like the needle can be done with strokes. The thickness thing applied here too; make the lines for the actual needle thinnest, and maybe make the plunger the thickest.

Other than that, it's just consistency, consistency, consistency. I mean seriously - look at how different EACH LINE for the handcase is! Those should all me more uniform, because it was made by a machine!
Hope this helps...

how can you tell that I am using too many points?

Look at the lines I made in the example - see how they look nice and smooth? I am only placing nodes where I absolutely NEED to. I also will change a drawn line at times to keep the nodes smoother, because, again, when translated to vector, it looks lumpy, if I put in unnecessary nodes.

Sometimes, for a more complex line, I'll often just make the basic line using only the beginning points and ending points for the line.
I will then bend my handles and stretch them as needed to get as much as I can of the bulk sense of the line, then I start adding in nodes in pairs to the line to put them where I need to, to make the lines smoother.

By the way, this works insanely well with frills...

Hope this helps.

Here is a step-by-step progression, basically.
The top was the first step, the bottom is the last. These ALL were wheer the final step resides - I just lifted them so you can see the madness to the method.
* I make the line (represented here by a stroke, becasuse I was too lazy, and it is in red.
* Then refine the basic shape, and then copy that line, paste it in place, shorten one of the lines to be the inside, then I join them together.
* I then make node pairs of all the laces where changes will happen (the little frilly bumps) and then I start aligning them with the actual locations on the image
*Finally, I adjust the line to the desired thickness.

The above steps took me longer than I usually make them, simply because the steps had to be cloned and color-changed. Even then, this took me only about ten minutes to do, because I had to THINK about the steps, instead of actually just doing it.

find one with a small amount of frills, and make the lines for the frills consistent. That will help you get a better understanding of how to do overlaps, as well as enhance your consistency.

also keep in mind that, unless it is super crucial to the art style you are tracing, not only clothing, but skin on people should not have any sharp pints - the thickness of skin (even thin) really doesn't allow for it, save for wrinkle creases...

Alright, so, for practice, I did this. Took me about 6-7 hours in total, had to think a lot when drawing the lines, checking consistency and adjusting. Started with the head and parts that are "on top" so those might have more errors than the rest.

Did notice myself getting better near the end though, I didn't have to think too much when placing the initial nodes and properly placing the handles, unlike at first, when I spent minutes on each individual line, correcting and just generally slowly getting used to working with inkscape.

Evaluation, please? I have no doubt that I still have much to learn. Maybe some more tips (that seem really obvious when you know 'em, and are kinda "why would you do it differently? everyone knows this super obvs thing")

And remembering how I did that nurse nanako vector... It's gonna be quicker to just start from scratch instead trying to fix something that was made with fundamentally flawed methods.

MUCH better. Though I'm seeing thickness inconsistencies again.

Using the thickness of the fingers (which on both hands is consistent without being uniform) as baseline, make the skin lines a weeee bit thicker to match them better. Same with the mouth. It is a "skin point": so it should share that thickness.

Same with the hair and fur points. FYI UFOs(super deformed) are probably the only place where hair is a thick line, so I would make the poiny tail, tail proper and any other points like the cat ears as thick. The difference in the ear fur color can stay the same as you have, since it is a different type of hair altogether.

Other than that: great strides in improving the overall look and feel. Did you use strokes at all? Not saying it is bad, but be sure to be discerning when using them, else it CAN make your image look more "manufactured" That's the difference between having consistent lines, versus uniform ones...

Thanks for the feedback, I'll fix it up when I got enough time again. Guess I need a lot more practice to reliably see such things.

Considering, you did REALLY WELL for only working with Vectors a few times. It ALWAYS is a matter of patience and practice.

I have a vector that took me over a year to finish, and some I abandoned because they were not translating well to vector to my satisfaction.

As for strokes: again, it's not I am trying to dissuade them, but like any other tool, determine WHEN you should use them.

Humor me on something: pick ONE LINE that is a stroke (her ribbon in the back, I assume, is one) and put the stroke to it down to one.

Now, copy that stroke.
With it copied, PASTE IT IN PLACE.
After this is done, use the sel;ection tool, and take that first object, node-by-node, and put it INSIDE the other line about equidistant.
Once this is done: use the pen tool and select an end node inside with it, then the same node outside. Do this to each termination end.

The (if illustrator) use SHIFT-X to make it a fill.

You can then adjust the line from there.

Just a trick I use so I don't get lost on my nodes and handles for complex lines.
Hope you find some use for this trick. (also look at the one I mentioned above with the skirt image. Those two techniques will help save your sanity for complex lines...)

I just got Illustrator after a very long time because I wanted to do some vector shit again.

I remember there being a tool (or feature) alongside the pen tool which would force parallel path lines to be evenly spaced to one another (like it would snap or something at a certain distance), so when it was filled the line was consistent. Was this ever a thing or am I just dreaming? I'm sure there was, which was the only reason I used it over Photoshop. Otherwise I'd just make paths and such using that, as I have about the same amount of control.

Pic related, did this on Photoshop after 4 years of not using illustrator, using only what I remember about the pen tool. Note this inconsistent thick/thin lines. I know the resolution is shit, I'm just asking about the lines.

Send help.
>>
>>1959862
Also, if no such tool exists, is it possible to make other parts of you path visible whilst adding and adjusting new anchor points? It'd make it a lot easier to gauge where the fuck I'm actually putting lines.
>>
I hope this isn't too difficult.

Not sure what tool you're talking about. You need to manually place the nodes parallel to each other and adjust them via the handles and the distance between the two nodes. You can covert between sharp and smooth nodes, which will help a little bit if you are having trouble getting a shape right, but it is fairly inconsistent in terms of working in your favor.

>>1959862
Place at least two nodes with the pen tool, go up to the top toolbar, select the first option next to Handles which should say something like "Show handles for multiple selected nodes." Now you will be able to select multiple nodes and have it display all the handles.
>>
>>1959862
Try this:
* Follow the steps in the tutorial for making layers, with your BOTTOM layer the image.
* Double-click on that image layer and select "Template" and undo the dim - it's better to have another layer that is a screen.
* Once you know aht layer youwant your lines on, hold the CTRL key and click on the eye next to that layer.

Then it makes the lines only show up as outlines.

For complex lines, also try my technique here:

It helps keep your sanity. Really.

Okay, I meant this. At first I didn't realise why all the lines were shit, but now I do, it's because I can't tell how far apart each line is, as they just disappear when I go to make another one.

I shouldn't have to set a stroke just to see the edge/line/path I've only just made, why the fuck does it always disappear when I try to draw another one? Am I seriously expected to jump between a 1px stroke just to see what I always could with Photoshit?

Okay, fixed what was pointed out,

removed a bunch of unneeded nodes (in inkscape stroke-to-path creates a lot of excess ones),

remembered that construction lines are a thing people use and learned about interpolation, great for properly spacing out parts,

pallet swapped to my personal preference (I now understand why those are so appealing),

asymmetry, if my poor eyesight causes inconsistencies, might as well reduce places that need to be consistent (within reason, of course)

discovered that adobe products don't like intel cards on a linux os, so that kinda sucks

Overall, I feel like I could start tackling one of the requests up there, something not too complex yet, do some low-level exp grinding as studies loom closer

Blocky terminations for wrinkles is NOT a place to use strokes.

It is one of the more annoying flaws of Inkscape. to be honest: you should NOT separate out an object into 2 parts then color each independantly - you will ALWAYS see this separation. Make one line and then the next.

That's how I had to fix half the lines I made for Nanoha/fate for the colored lines of the dresses, where the shadow affected the colored lines. In the end, it was more work than just making the two individually, and fudging one shape under the other.

Okay, good to know.
I was about 90% done when I noticed that. I kinda resolved it in part by duplicating the layer, but that just reduces the transparency by about 60-80%. A second duplicate nearly eliminates it. This time it's good enough for my needs, but I'll try to make sure I don't ever need to do that again.

There's some color peeking on the right side of the collar. I'm not a fan of the cheek shading or nose shadow. Lines in general seem way too thick in the ear and for the jacket. Feels like the jacket is from a different vector and the head was pasted on top, my guess is because the saturation of the jacket isn't agreeing with the head.
>>
>>1961321
Lines are much too thick for the most part.

I like that you are trying to use colored outlines but you need to work on picking colors, the dark purple is much to bright/rich,

You look to be trying to build depth with your lines but have not quit figured out how to make it work, also a lot of your lines feel like you made a stroke and converted it to an outline and then pointed out the end if needed.

I've seen your other work in the Minimalism thread so you have a decent handle on simplifying and smoothing out lines but you have some bad habits from doing so many minimalism images.
>>
>>1961325
>>1961330
Okay, I believe my main problem now is style. I've got some idea about how I vector, but I'm applying that knowledge/techniques (if I can call them that) not appropriately and generally making line thickness/color decisions (and probably others) without thinking.

Best i can figure, I took Derpy's criticism/advice about making lines different for different parts to a bit of an extreme. I need to tone that down.

This is the first time I've heard about building depth with lines, so, yeah... I should first learn other basic stuff about how drawings are actually done.

>a lot of your lines feel like you made a stroke and converted it to an outline

Damn. I did do that with the cat chibi (in parts) but not with this, so now I don't even know what I'm doing wrong.

Could someone give me a specific task to do, like, re-do this but with thinner lines and stick to basic colors, no getting fancy with blurs and gradients and the whatnots.

What I can learn from just doing random things haphazardly is close to being exhausted, I could really use some direction now, before bad habits become locked in.
>>
>>1961239
Good.
>>
>>1961346
Have you watched my Illustrator tutorial? Its long and rambly and I think you are working in Inkscape but it covers a lot of the subjects you need to work on.

Honestly the image is not bad and most peoples first couple turn out much worse. Its mainly a lot of little things that come together to cause the issues.

The main problem is you are trying to get fancy before you are really comfortable with doing the line work really well, so my advice is this do a few simple vectors with flat cell shaded color and see if you can make the outline carry the image and not the colors. Normal vectors are a lot harder then minimalism and it will take a few before you get the hang of them, you are almost there so and we want to see good work from you so don't take anything we say to hard.

A good example of a vector I did with no gradient or anything fancy but still turned out good (IMO) is the Asuka one I did a while back if you want to look at how I did my outlines.
>>
>>1961346
Follow daul's tut. Stick to just the fundamentals. If you've done the tut image before then find another similar image. You seem to have gone too quickly into complex images without learning the basics, and as you've said, you're trying to incorporate too many techniques at once. I've seen your work in the other thread too and while you've improved a lot you also don't have the eye to objectively look at your own work.

Find a higher quality image with more defined strokes instead of a fuzzy cap like that last image. Don't use blurs and gradients for several images. Don't worry about going back to that image and fixing it, might as well scrap it altogether in my opinion. Look up color theory and read about the basics because you seem to lack a lot of sense with color harmony.
>>

I apologize for that. When I gave the pointers, I hadn't thought you'd use the chibi art as your referral point - this is what you've been basing your lines off of, even now.

So think of the things I gave you as guidelines, and look at what others have doen to do the applications. Since you've seen my work, look at the rest of the stuff on deviantart (from the links in the OP), and see how others apply it, to make their own styles that fit their personality.

Then from what you learn and what we give for suggestions, your own thickness and color choices all become more apparent, the more you do this.,,

What these posts say cover everything else.

For now, Don't post finals and get critiques - do it about one "section" at a time and look for input until the theory gets more ingrained.

These threads are slow enough we can help like this.

Yeah, I should've started with this and done simple stuff to improve incrementally.

One of my problems is that I started doing image modification and redrawing as a hobby to make more personal wallpapers about three years ago, and am practically fully self-taught. And the first full trace I did was in GIMP using its path tool. Gods, I'm going to have to redo that one day and show the original. Now that is a mess.
I'm sure how I did that left some bad imprints that this place is slowly exorcising.

Anyway, I didn't overly complicate this, just focused on the line-work, how'd I do?

>>1961528
About that... I scraped it and will restart after I do at least a few other vectors. Now it kinda feels like a mid-term exam, but I need to pass several tests before I'm admitted.

Speaking of which, next I'll do one or two of the other images provided in daul's tutorial. Gotta solidify the basics.

good, but you're still using Chibis, so try something that is not using the "thick lines" style.

Try doing this one for its simplicity and change of style. I only want you to focus on the linework for this - do the hair and post, then after we comment, add in the skin parts and post, then do the same for the clothing and post.

It shouldn't take that long to do, and will give you a better scope on how to not only meta-game,

but also how different items and styles require different thought processes.

Ignore the filename - I just use that as a dumping ground for when I show things on images.

The two circled lines are the thickest I would go with the lines. My reasoning is this:

* She is an elf.
* She has nice ears.
You want the ears to "pop" more than the hair, so you give it a little bit thicker lines - I'd suggest for the ears/skin to use the line thickness you have for the braid.

You don't have to follow these - again, this is comments so you can learn form me, the madness to my method. I hope others will chime in with their thoughts, as well...

Do you guys not archive the .svg images anywhere?
>>
>>1961876
Most vector artists don't upload the vector files unless they're asked to, since for the most part a 5k png is plenty.

That said, if you see a vector in the Google drive or the deviantart group and the png isn't enough most of the artists still have personal backups of all their stuff so they can upload it for you.
>>
>>1961880
I can't say I have any particular need, it's more a matter of principle about getting the highest quality available. And obviously the vector format is better than any rasterized version.

Is it an issue of file sizes or people stealing stuff? Or just the way it has always been done?

Made some more progress. Slightly adjusted some of the skin, mainly the fingers, but don't know if I made any noticeable change.
Did I make the cloth too thick (again), and should the belt lines be thicker still since it's leather? I'm new to this fancy-pants "subtlety" concept, but am starting to see why others find it appealing.
>>
>>1962281
Only lines I would change would be for her choker - a choker is thin material like ribbon or thin cloth, unless it is leather (which I don't think it is)

The other lines look fine.

To fix the hand:
* Make a new layer, and copy the old hand onto it, keeping the other in place.
* Change the line colors of the one on bottom, and lock the layer for now.
* Remove the line for the the middle finger (third from top or bottom - it really is in the middle)
* Resize all the lines by a tiny bit each to fill most of the gaps from the missing line
* Make new "middle finger (the one that is below the one you deleted) a little bit fatter, like the original but not too fat like the origina.

* adjust these lines and palm line until all take up the same space - you might have to tweak where the knife or carrot end up, but it will look better overall.
* replace new, tweaked hand for the old one. (after unloacking layers, etc.)
* Do one more tweak after move for slight things like lengths, etc.
>>
>>1962082
This is "doable" as - is, save a few places:
* The uner lines for her eyes should be tapers on each end.
* Make the eyes as circles - they look more like wobbly eggs, and look funny. You can elongate them into elliptical shapes better form there. The eggs you have make it look sloppy and will definitely show in the vector.
* The terminators for her armpits should be tapers and not blocky Really, you can see it in real life - don't always follow pen strokes for guidelines.
* make her dress lines a little thicker - these dont' give any "pop" to the shape f the image and makes it look flat. I'd say the same for the hair, too, if you have the time/patience to fix them - make those lines thinner.
>>
>>1962281
Now, looking at this thumb: can't you see already the difference the line thicknesses make? It has a definite sense of delicacy to it, as well as good definition of the lines as a whole.

Now: look at the thumb for >>1962082
and it has no "definition" to the lines, and thus the image, while showing up, doesnt' have any "pop" of the other one.

Hope this gives you a bit more insight, too...
>>
>>1962293
IF the extra finger up top is supposed to be a THUMB, shorten it - that would fix the issue easier.

shorten it bay 25-50% and that might be the easier way to go...

I held a ruler in a similar pose and looked in a mirror - the thumb was the main issue. Still didn't stop me from messing even more with the fingers. I've looked at them so much now and simply can't find anything that annoys me anymore.

Made the carrot chunky, given its comical size.
Thin, sharp blade, tough, thick handle. Feels like a solid knife to me.

Couldn't decipher if she's wearing a log backpack thing or if it's just a background chair. More lines, more exercise.

So, that's all the lines. Anyone see anything off? (please not the fingers, gods, I want them to be in the past :'(

And of course, thank you Prof. Derpy (and everyone else for that matter) for your persistence and guidance. I've learned a lot (still a lot more to learn of course) and feel like i've improved significantly during this past month.
>>
>>1962510
>Couldn't decipher if she's wearing a log backpack thing or if it's just a background chair. More lines, more exercise.
It's a backpack. Only things I'd change
* the sharp corner on her pouch - make it a bit softer to go with the overall feel of a pouch.
* make the belt's lines so they aren't OVER the buckle - look at the buckle's nottom, and make sure the belt is liek this trougout. it might be easiest just to take the top part of the buckle, and move it up a hair, to give it that overalp feel, and not have to screw with every line for the belt.
* the end of the knife - I know caracol likes to have soft lines for things, but most knives, where the blade is, have to be sharp-cornered (for the bottom at least) because they have their purpose in cooking. The top of the knife blade can stay rounded.
* I'd still put that thumb in because it still gives the illusion of a fifth finger instead of four fingers and a thumb, but that's just me.

Overall: VAST improvement. looks really good!
>>
>>1962441
If you don't know what you are talking about, please don't say anything. daul was correct - that is a vector (and poorly done) because you can tell how the lines are. The conversion to a jpeg added the artifacts, and anyone with ANY knowledge of how images work knows how much cock jpegs suck because of this artifacting.

Now that lines are out of the way, I could use some advice for shading. Mainly about light, dark and shadow areas from one light source, something like that. I don't really know the correct terminology for this stuff, so I might not know how to ask what I mean exactly.

The top of the head cascade(?) part always gets me. Here I visualized where the inner hair lines would be and sorta drew light over them, but there's probably a better method.
The light halos? too, I did two variants here, what would work better for this image?

For now I'll stick to very few flat colors. Once all the areas are defined, I'll make them more gradual and smooth where appropriate.

Very rough lines - whomever translates this into smoother lines is going to have some difficulties.

Are there any other versions of this character with a similar pose with crisper artwork?
>>
>>1962716
I think that is a sensible plan. I'd darken the darkest hair color a bit more - making it closer to burnt pumpkin or umber or whatever the hell it is called, but then I have never been good at coloration - I just wing it until either daul gets annoyed enough to give me other suggestions, or I come upon something *I* think looks nice...
