Honestly, it's pretty terrible. This isn't a job for magic wand or magnetic lasso, the background colors are too varied and won't give you a clean edge. I would use pen tool, but I recommend polygonal lasso for simplicity's sake. Go around the outline, cutting out all of the background color, which tends to blend into the outline. Consider just doing a smaller portion of the picture just for practice and posting that for critique. Also, you were too heavy handed with the inner glow. We use it to remove residual glow around renders and crisp up the edge. It's pointless if your cutout is that messy to begin with. Take it a lesson in using a tool without understanding the goal.

Better, but still unacceptable. You can see the outline of the oval. If you magic wand the white background, then the blue oval, an outline remains. Think about why that happens. Also there's a ton of white in her hair, again left behind for similar reasons. For this render as well, you should use polygonal tool so you understand what your final render should look like before attempting to use the magic wand. The way I see it, shortcuts are for those who understand how to use them properly. Sorry for the essay.

After that guy shat on me, I went to go see how to do it. That was honestly my first 2 vectors ever and I wasn't aware that magic tool/lasso wasn't the best option and I ended up wasting peoples time and board space. I'll try again whenever I think it's acceptable to be posted here.

I have all of the non-sayaka spaces outlined using the pen tool. I know cntrl - H brings up all the nodes for the line your on, but how do I select all of them? I want to add a small feather radius.

Ok, now you're wasting file posts. Print screen if you want your pen outline to show. Ctrl and drag to select your path -> right click -> make selection or fill path with black on a mask layer. Both have options to feather, but don't over do it. You can even go without if you cut out well. Also, ctrl+h hides the path for better viewing, not selects them.

Question.

Is it possible to select the white space and simply press delete to give it a transparent background?

In the Replace Color tool it selects the white space so accurately for what I need,
but I can't simply delete the space only adjust it's hue, saturation, lightness etc.

The Magic Wand tool and Quick Selection tool don't select the entire area/color all at once nor go to the edges as flawlessly.

Magic Wand in particular doesn't seem to work on the texture of this background.

I don't need a third party apologist. This is the second time I requested the render. It was a couple of IMT threads ago. So just trying again. It's disappointing that someone posts really mediocre work and then asks plaintively, "is this OK" knowing full well it is not. There is some beautiful work being done here and I was hoping to benefit from it. If you can't do a good job, don't do it or at least don't try to pass it off expecting to be commended.

Never used paint.net but I just downloaded it and replicated your steps and that worked fine for me. As long as you fill the background layer with your paint bucket and not the new layer that contains your rendered chibi that should work fine. Maybe there is a problem with that chibi image you are using?

Normally you have a background layer with your background colour or image and on top the layer with your render. With the method you used here you will run into problems with semi-transparent pixels around the edges and obviously separated areas like the one that you have there in her hair.

The only thing I could think of is that there was something off with the .png file itself. Try downloading the version you uploaded to imgur. There is a very small chance that uploading it to imgur "fixed" your file since they convert it to their standard or something if I remember correctly, though I doubt it.

In short, imgur runs a lossless compression for images that are smaller than 5mb. That compression probably removed the part out of the images properties that was messing with paint.net when reading the file.

The fact that imgur compresses images is also the reason we don't recommend uploading to imgur. Especially for files over 5mb since it runs a lossy compression on those, resulting in a lower quality image.

That being said, loading the original render by itself into paint.net then saving it as a fresh .png might fix it.

Don't mean to spam the thread but I just found out that imgur actually runs a lossy compression on images that are 1mb and larger for anonymous uploads. The 5mb mentioned up there are for account holders only.

So for anyone who might have gotten the wrong idea there. Just don't use imgur.

No.1 Has an absolute crap ton of hair and also a bright filter on it. The render is going to be bad excluding the hours it will take to do it.

No.2 Has a crap ton of redrawing and alot of the features that are there are as a result of the branches specifically. A redner would just have her clothes ripped in a funny pose.

This was one of the easiest renders I did.

If you have solid background just use magic wand and delete the background. Select the pixels of your remaining pic and expand it with 1 pixel and go over with the history brush so you smooth the lines. Don't try to do difficult stuff if you can solve it easily.
