Which is the best and why?
Not "retro" but Armored Core 3 or Silent Line are my personal favorites.
Silent Line is my all-time favorite, Master of Arena is the best retro AC.

First generation you should start with 1 and just then play the "sequels" since you can import your savedata into them. The sequels are basically expansions packs to the original. Out of the PS2 games which is where the bulk of the series is, 3 and Nexus are good starting points.
>>4249243
Wish. I didn't know that. I just bought matter of arena today with no preconception of the first few installments. Think I could just jump into matter and have a good time?
>>4249154
Only the PS1 games have first person view, so that.
>>4249295
Sorry let me correct myself, only the PS1 games have first person view as a thing without needing to be unlocked by beating the game.
>>4249295
That's amazing! I had no idea!! I get to go home tonight and play it. PS1 FPS is my favorite retro subgenre
>>4249287
It is the one with the most content outside the main missions either way. Importing saves means you retain your mech and everything, but it's not needed to enjoy the game.
>>4249287
You can jump into it just fine, it's just easier and more convenient to have a savefile from the older games because you wont have to unlock the majority of the parts anymore.
>>4249292
Sounds like I'm in for a long game. Twas a steal. The discs are in mint condition.
>>4249303
Before you go ape shit like I did, you can only enable first person view by pressing a simple button combination in the pause menu, and everytime you pause it will be reverted. It's worth it though. Silent Line has actual modeled HUD cockpit view but probably has some bullshit like needing to be unlocked by beating the campaign.
>>4249295
I think silent line or Nexus had it too. It doesn't really feel right without seeing the inside of the cockpit though.
>>4249382
You ain't getting modeled cockpit on PS1, although some racing games did it
Nexus is the best, ost too

What's the best controller for these ps1 games? Flight stock? Normal controller?
As a headphone user, the audio quality in this games kind of lacks, especially in comparison to games such as Wipeout 3. Im really not impressed with the soundtrack or sound effect quality.

>no Shining
The fuck, anon.

Bravado is the best 3 track.

I'm actually not joking. The gain is oversaturated for a bunch of the sound effects and music. Its very muddy.
I tried playing Armored Core 1 and thought it was terrible...then I used Xpadder to remap all the controls so it plays like a modern game, more akin to Verdict Day and now it's fun...this is a series that really needs analog sticks to be playable by normal people, though now it kinda feels a bit easy, like the shitty controls were the only thing that made it challenging.
>>4251540
seriously the old ps1 armored core games don't even support analog sticks. I'm so far not impressed with the series.... but i also don't have a hard on for mechs.
>>4251540
>playable by normal people
And why the fuck would normal people be here, giving a shit about this? Normal people pls go
>>4254118
lol, fucking children thinking they're so weird and special for playing PS1 games
4 answer hands down last good armored core made
nobody here is special, and neither is armored core
>>4251540
I thought the L1/R1 strafe buttons were fine for movement, but it takes some getting used to. Due to the large lock-on box of 1, you don't really need fine control, and things that could benefit from it like rockets are balanced around that fact.
>>4255239
Yep, its like people only play it for 5 seconds before giving up.
>>4255256
I mean, in my case, it was the only control scheme at the time, and it was used in Medal of Honor, Goldeneye, and whatever else was released at the time, so it was fair to say I had a lot of practice at it. Even during the PS2/Xbox gen, I was still setting control schemes to use it because it was what I was familiar with.
>>4254112
The first one was in development before those were even a thing and it''s not that hard unless you're a whiny baby who can't take five seconds to adapt to something they're not used to.
Original Armored Core a best.
