I think it's cool, I already have an ags 101 modded OG GBA, but this seems like the best way to play GBC if you want a lit screen. In my opinion back-lighting ruins gbc colors completely though, so saturated : -(

Then again, I don't really like BennVenns method since it requires you to pretty much hack up the complete upper side of the case and you'll pretty much have to glue it shut since you also have to cut off the upper screwposts.

its only a matter of time until proper sized screens are manufactured. I bought a repro shell for the mod so i'm not too upset about filing down the upper half, and I have a GBC with a bad screen anyways so it would need to be replaced anyways. pretty stoked to do this mod since I like to play at night and its pretty much impossible to get good lighting indoors without some kind of glare

You can't separately install backlights into modern lcd's like you can with old screens like the Game Boy.
Backlights are always integrated into the lcd panel itself and yes, these new aftermarket lcd's have an integrated backlight just like the og 101 screens

Definitely ruins the colors, thats the same reason why generally I can't stand emulation on an lcd. The colors of a non backlit gbc just give off a certain feeling that can't be captured. Nostalgia I guess.

I haven't looked into cables for the GBA, but I kind of assumed it used the same connection, so an older link cable would work.

No. You can use a Game Boy Color link cable to link with GB/C games (either with another Advance or a Game Boy Color) but you need to use a Game Boy Advance link cable to link with Game Boy Advance games.

The link connection port is similar to the cartridge port, where a legacy cable can connect to the GBA, but a GBA cable can't connect with a GBC. The GBA used an octagonal connector with a notch in one side, while the GBC used a Hexagonal one.

They aren't. It's around $15 for a decent SP.
Replacement screens are at least $30.

You can easily source GBs from Japan at ¥1500-2000 for the good ones. Some of those Youtube """ e-celebs""" even had their SPs from the junk bin for ¥500 with a working original SP screen.

Granted, you still need to get the custom cables and wires but those are dirt cheap.

You can buy a regular GBA and an SP, buy the custom cables, switch the two screens for the price of that single $30-50 inferior Chinese AGS-101 screen.

Also, go to some /vr/ archive sites, there's a few AGS-101 threads in the past months alone.

uh i just looked this new "mod" up, all it is is a ags101 screen. They had to remove huge amounts of plastic for it to fit correctly. Probably causes some structural failure of your gbc, not to mention reduces the battery life from 35 hours down to 2.

Also, the backlight mod sucks for many reasons:

The screen on the left side of the video looks noisy. Since that was the new Chinese screen in the first comparison, I assumed it was at fault, but then in the latter part of the video he does an unrelated test (two different AGS-101 screens) and the left one looks noisy there too. Something to do with his camera I guess.

The GBA has a pot in it that adjusts the voltage supplied to the screen. If it gets too low voltage it gets flickery like that.
That retarded youtuber probably just didnt adjust it to try to get it cleaner like it should be.
