The sequel uses the same characters and designs but adopted the hack and slash gameplay. Calling them unrelated is wrong.

Yes. Also, not only did Omega Force use similar movesets and character designs when it went over to two, but in the two most recent DW games they even had DLC costumes of characters in their DW1 looks.
