Hi /vr/

What year do you think was the best in video game history?

I'm partial to 1998.

Age of Empires: Rise of Rome
Baldur's Gate
Blood 2: The Chosen
Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines
Delta Force
Grim Fandango
Half Life
Heretic II
Lula: The Sexy Empire
Rage of Mages
Railroad Tycoon 2
Rainbow Six
Shogo: Mobile Armor Division
SiN
Spyro the Dragon
Wargasm

Just so much good stuff.

Let me hear your favourites and why.

Phantasy Star IV is actually from 1993. The american release was in 1995, though.

>You mean one of the most overrated
No, I mean one of the best. Ocarina of Time is the most highly rated game of all time for a reason. Every single game made over the last 15 years owes something to Ocarina of Time or Super Mario 64. Every, single, one. No two games have been as influential as these N64 classics. You can tell yourself that OoT is overrated, and that's fine; some people like to smear themselves in feces and they enjoy it, and they're entitled to their opinion as well. But make no mistake, OoT is one of the greats, and you are one of the faggots. This is just the reality of the world.

How about Depression Quest, what does that owe them?

1994 was a pretty good year for me. In fact, all of the 90s were pretty good to me. I guess every year builds upon the previous ones, get more and more good stuff.

I still disagree with these though even in their day. First magazine I bought in a long time, and I will say it is a strange feeling being frozen in time to see how things have changed. Life is Strange at #64 beating out #65 Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines and then when I see that my Command & Conquer Red Alert is still remembered as pretty good at #40, I see #39 is Her Story. I do not have the money to build or get a good computer to try out all these new classics, I wish I did because my friends are all enjoying #24 Overwatch and I am stuck enjoying my old games.

Modern classics are becoming rarer.
Still, you deserve a decent PC to make your own mind up.

the 3 best years, objectively I might add, are as follows:
1987
1995
2001

I know, it is expensive. Just like back in the 90s, even though I cannot afford to get the games I was so excited about, I just rely on my imagination from what I read in the magazines.

In that 94 issue, They had the original Doom as #1, which I think proved some good action on the PC keeping up with the agility consoles had, but at that time I thought the original Civilization was much more addictively fun. Interestingly enough, Doom 2 hung on to be 2017's #69 best game of all time. Also in that 1994 issue, a few sports simulation games I did not like made the cut for best PC games of all time which I definitely did not agree with snubbing out many better games that I had played. So I understand what you mean by making my own mind up, but finances do keep me from having the ability to do so.

Well in 2017, they declared #1 The Witcher 3 as the best game of all time. From all that I have been hearing about the game, it sounds amazing. The highest rated /vr/ game released prior to the year 2000 is #34 Planescape Torment which I do love. I look around the internet these days and read/see all the praise for #92 Undertale, while I have not played that, I view all the praise and enthusiasm for that game like how I experienced Chrono Trigger on SNES in its day, so that may be like the modern day equivalent the kids like now. Just saying maybe I am missing much, because I still love Chrono Trigger, and I imagine 20 years or so from now maybe those same kids that loved Undertale so much will treat that game with as much reverence as I do to CT.

Not even an
>all new games suck
kind of poster but I can't see how Life is Strange could appeal to an adult. It's one of those cinematic experiences™ with pretty much no gameplay and a really teen focused plot and set of characters that try to be deep but in the end just makes you think of a guy in his early 20s philosophizing after smoking weed. Like Boyhood and those kind of indie movies.

Her Story is pretty much 0 gameplay too but being a murder mistery makes it a bit more fun. But even if not all modern games are like that, obviously, that's the trend. Pure gameplay experiences are becoming harder to come by. Back during 6th gen I used to complain about stories being mandatory even in genres that don't really benefy from it like belt scrollers™ or platformers but we're way past that point.

not retro, but my favorite year for gaming was 2004, to me thats when the wave crashed and started to reel back, the high water mark
