You don't necessarily need 1cc to feel challenged, it's about finding that sweet spot between being challenged and not giving a fuck. Usually around 4-6 credits should do.

Scoring is broken in Metal Slug. You get rewarded for slowly killing mooks with the knife and bosses with the pistol, milking spawn points is encouraged and the item drops are random.

The way I see it, there are far harder games out there that do reward 1cc (or don't even have continues), so I don't consider it to be an unreasonable challenge for Metal Slug. But yes, it's all about finding what's actually fun for you.
