Can we all agree the SNES chip is overrated? I hate how the instruments sound so tinny and weak, plus how they had to make it reverby and low-quality due to the hardware/cart limitations.

I've never heard enough praise for it to ever consider it overrated.
Genesis's yamaha on the other hand people won't shut the fuck up about the bog standard piece of 80's FM crap. Nintendo is lucky that's all they ever really had to compete with.

We all know the SID and PAULA are the best chips.

PersonalIy, I'm not a huge fan of both chips.

Genesis music generally sounds too simple, annoying or old fashioned for me and god save your ears if it uses voice samples. This console literally gave me a headache thanks to Fantasia's soundtrack.

SNES music sounds more modern but is too muffled and reuses many instruments. I can hear the same horns and reverb in many soundtracks.

Inb4: I have both consoles, I love and grew with them but I'm not crazy about their music.

Yes, Japs are tiny dicked haters.
>>
>>4223870
Yup ever since DKC outsold almost anything they made.
>>
>>4223876
Correction on my part. DKC outsold every game that wasn't a pack-in.
>>
>>4223876
and every good game on N64
you think niggas wasted their time with mario 64 and zelda?
it was goldeneye / pd all day nigga
>>
>>4223859
Not at all. Not at all. Nintendo were fairly mediocre coders of the N64 - their own hardware. They were outcoded not only by Rare but by Factor 5, Boss Studios, even Acclaim (and probably a few more here or there).

The best looking first party game on N64 is Mario Tennis. And that wasn't even made by Nintendo themselves, but Camelot, a former Sega developer.
>>
>>4223893
I retired Goldeneye the minute I got PD since Rare was smart enough to include the Facility stage AND included all the old weapons.
>>
>>4223883
dkc was also a pack in tho right?
if u bought a snes in 94
>>
>>4223898
Huh I guess it was. Weird I don't ever remember that.
>>
>>4223896
majoras mask looks better.
>>
>>4225265
No, it looks like blurry shit. The graphics are barely improved over OoT, which itself look worse than Banjo-Kazooie. What was good for 1998 wasn't good for the year 2000.

The artstyle was marginally improved over OoT but that was it.
>>
>>4222023
that sounds awesome
>>
>>4222000
first of all, nice numeros

second, I love SID but I don't know if I can defend PAULA, if only because of the inconsistent LED filter and awful stereo. Though, it did spawn trackers which is pretty great.

>Wavetable Synth
What is this?
Can you give an example?
>>
>>4223456
It's not to YM2612's credit but the mega drive actually does also have the master system's SN76496 soundchip, and some games do use it, mainly sonic games, so yeah you will hear PSG interspersed within. Most games just used the YM2612 exclusively though.

>Virtual Boy
Shit like Galactic Pinball had me grooven before I even got to the title screen.
https://youtube.com/watch?v=y5_ab7dX7_s
>>
>>4227396
PAULA is great for tunes, but for game full sountracks it kinda sucks, 4 channels is way too little for music + effects. A simple added PSG would have worked wonders.
>>4227603
PSG is used quite a lot actually, if only for effects. The noise channel is quite versatile.
>>
>>4227658
I really don't know if you can consider NES wavetable. You can represent it with a wave table, but the table can't be modified except for the PCM channel.

Same with game boy, but that actually does have one wave table channel, albiet limited.

I'm not familiar with the others.
>>
>>4227894
I never mentioned the NES!? You drunk?
>>
>>4227915
calm down there edgelord. I didn't know that FDS also has a wavetable channel. I still think that one wavetable channel doesn't make for a wavetable synth.
>>
>>4227658
Virtual Boy has actually a pretty good sound, I was impressed by it when I first tried it.
>>
>>4227921
I just don't get why you bother to shit up this place if you can't even tell the difference between a NES and FDS.
>>
>>4227997
I made a basic mistake and corrected it, no need to get toxic.

>>4225270
How is MM blurrier than other N64 games?
>>
>>4228002
>How is MM blurrier than other N64 games?
It's due to the extremely muddy textures the game uses. The reason the N64 has a bad reputation for texturing isn't the hardware but Nintendo's software. They absolutely could not texture to save their life on their own hardware - their games had the worse texturing on the system outside of shovelware.

>>4228549

I'm still trying to understand how exactly this is different than FM, I know it is, I just don't get how
>>
>>4231545
Basically, wavetable instruments how most guys put it are like really, REALLY small programmable samples (or waveforms) that are so short and limited while also moderately flexible that they don't pass as DAC even though you can stream low bit PCM audio with some clever programming. FM audio is mostly about modulating non programmable waveforms through amplitude and arithmetic between multiple operators.
