So, /vr/, I got interested in Shadow Warrior. I like Duke3D, and I noticed several people say SW is better. And since it's freeware, there was nothing stopping me from playing it, right?

Anyway, so I tried to fire it up using a source port, and - what the fuck?
First, your very first enemies in the game can either throw pathetic and easily avoidable shuriken - OR, without any indication, turn into fucking Chaingunners from Doom, and whittle down your health in a second. Except they don't have any attack animation and it's all one frame, meaning that taking cover won't work - and they don't miss either.

So I assumed I'm supposed to make them flinch, right? Bullshit, they don't flinch! Firing Uzi at them doesn't seem to stop them from firing at all! What the fuck?

I assume I'm supposed to hit them with a weapon that kills them in one hit, but - in the first level I don't HAVE one. What the hell? Sword kills them, sure, but I have to run up to the uzi guys and take forced damage in the meantime. Shuriken are useless, and fists don't seem to do any better. I get a missile launcher later, but it has no ammo.

The explosives throwing guys, fish and wraiths at least seem fair, but the most common enemies ar absolute bullshit, what the fuck? In Duke, very first enemy throwed fast projectiles you could dodge, or take cover from - or just kill them before they did anything. Here, no such luck.

What the fuck is this? Who designed this? And let's not talk about the fact that first level of Duke was a huge open ended porno theater with a city street, and first level of this crap are two nondescript buildings you run between back and forth. Also the fact that in a game so heavily based around melee, I don't have instant melee button, though Duke had one.

Why do people like this game? Is there something I'm missing here?
>>
>so much grief over stupid push over mooks

Git gud, m8

>and they don't miss either.
Bullshit.

>Bullshit, they don't flinch!
Bullshit.

>Firing Uzi at them doesn't seem to stop them from firing at all!
Bullshit.

>Shuriken are useless, and fists don't seem to do any better.
Git gud, bruh.

Or get a source port that isn't full of shit.
>>
>>4220416
I'm using SWP, what source port should I be using?
>>
For me SW always felt very flimsy and overall unaccurate when compared to other Build games. It's really weird. The potential is there and it was a nice idea to have a ninja when you already had an american steroid monster (Duke3D) and a recently deceased man (Blood).
>>
>>4220416
Also 'git gud' alone doesn't tell me anything. Do you have any actual tips?
As for flinching - even if they do, it doesn't seem to matter much because enemies fire so fast that even when I do everything as fast as I can, I still take like 15-20 damage. Is this SUPPOSED to happen?
>>
>>4220431
Yeah, it does feel kinda rushed. I mean it was 1997, after all, and 3D Realms was already wasting time with the next Duke game. So much so, they actually HAD to sell Blood to somebody.

>>4220429
I honestly don't know, sorry, mate. Always played the original DOS version either on my Win98 machine or DOSBox.
>>
>>4220435
Taking a bit of damage really is unavoidable sometimes.

Keep circle strafing and blasting with Uzis.
Dash towards and use the sword.
Works most of the time in my experience.
>>
>>4220447
>Taking a bit of damage really is unavoidable sometimes.

It was the same with the machine gun lizards in Duke. You really couldn't avoid their bullets.
>>
>>4220450
Yes, you can.
>>
Use explosive weapons as much as you can. Enemies can't do shit if you've been gibbed as soon as you see them.

>>4220494

Someone post that webm of an anon strafing around an Enforcer in E2L1 and taking no damage.
>>
Thanks everyone, I guess I should adjust my expectations and try again. I guess I just have been playing too much Doom lately, so I'm used to being able to completely avoid damage.
>>
>>4220608
Shadow Warrior's balance is different. You can die more easily, but you can also kill more easily.

SW has tons of ammo, even if you do "katana starts". Unlike Doom or DN3D, you should use the RPG/Grenade Launcher more, as well as other weapons like the railgun etc The shotgun and uzis are for when you don't have those or when it's the last resort, or for simpler situations.
>>
>>4220398
You're going to take damage. See this.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFLtUZnsWSc

Notice how he's got more shit than you. Learn the levels, gear and map knowledge basically keeps you alive. Play on easier settings until you've wall humped everything into memory, knowing secrets is unfortunately more part of playing the game effectively rather than extra goodies. Keep out from the open if possible and clear rooms with proper angles appropriately.
Sword also kills the first mooks in one hit even on the hardest difficulty.

Get bmouse if you're using dosbox for better mouse input, set up a batch file to run it with something like bsw.bat so you can just start playing.
>>
>>4220398
Also hitting the first uzi guys with two shuriken batches will kill them.
>>
My only complaint with Shadow Warrior is that the evil ninja variants are kinda all over the place in threat and health.
>>
>>4220398
use the fuckin sword lol
>>
>>4220398
>and fists don't seem to do any better
You have a one shot kill sword bruh

Anyway is this a SW thread?
>Zilla sends his regards! *Jumps in like he's on the moon* *Gets one shotted by a katana instantly*
>OH DAMN IM RUNNING INTO WALLS NOW
>OOH SPLITTU PERSONARITY
Why does this game have so many memorable lines? Long Wang really is an underrated character.
>>
The fists are made to be use with the invisibility power up.

It also increases your fists' strength.
>>
>>4220626
Not the OP, but this video actually does a great job of showcasing basically every problem they complained about. The problem is only solved by knowing where every secret is, basically guaranteeing that your first playthrough is going be nothing but relentless savescumming whilst you learn the map.
>>
Yes, you are missing something. For starters, you are missing a riotgun from one of the secrets on the first level. The second thing you are missing is "Don't judge the game by its first level", which, in this particular game is terribad and really not representative of what comes next. At the VERY LEAST, you should complete the entirety of shareware episode (levels 1-4).

The third thing, this is a twitch-shooter. It's insanely fast. It's glass cannon galore. You either kill the enemies immediately after you spot them (and you can, given the proper weapons, dish out the damage at incredible rate) or they kill you. Like, no joke, the tempo of combat in this game, on max difficulty, is three to four times faster then tempo of Blood's combat on Extra Crispy. Like, Blood is such a repetitive snorefest, compared to this game, it isn't even funny.

Four, not all the levels are good, but for the most part, they ARE really, really good. You'll see what I mean by the end of shareware episode.

Five, some weapons are just weird and not really meant to be used by any more or less sane person. Use what you like.

Six, for your sake, I hope you have auto-aim on. Because, without it, those hornets will just destroy you.
>>
>>4221413
Or, and one more thing, you can switch weapon modes for some weapons via tapping the corresponding key repeatedly.

That's at the highest difficulty you dipshit. Of course he's going to take damage.
>>
>>4221197
I played through SW on NPNG difficulty a couple of years back. Apart from the shareware episode I barely remembered the game (and it's not like I knew the shareware episode that well). Honestly I had no problem not dying for the vast majority of the game. The only shit that did rarely kill me were the insta-death explosives -- NOT the "dreaded" hitscanner enemies that babbies always menstruate about. Also the guy playing really isn't very good and doesn't utilise cover properly, nor does he use his weapons particularly well. You really don't have to be taking the kind of damage he is eating.
>>
>>4221486
>I played through SW on NPNG difficulty a couple of years back

The only way I still play Shadow Warrior these days:
>NPGN difficulty
>'katana start' every map
>no saving/loading in the middle of a map

Played the entire game and the 2 add-ons, it was a blast. Considering how much ammo and weapons there is in every single map, katana start barely makes a difference; and not doing katana start is ridiculous since you're full of everything at all times starting the 2nd map.

Also, katana start actually makes you use items.

As for the guy asking about sourceports: both SWP and Redux have their pros&cons, but I find the best way to play the game is still with DOSbox using bMouse.
>>
>>4221413
This is the same shadow warrior that for some reason is absolutely obsessed with Blood and feels the need to bring it up every time SW is brought up.

>Like, no joke, the tempo of combat in this game, on max difficulty, is three to four times faster then tempo of Blood's combat on Extra Crispy. Like, Blood is such a repetitive snorefest, compared to this game, it isn't even funny.
How would you know, when you admitted to not even playing through the game?

https://warosu.org/vr/thread/4206007#p4212780
>Shadow Warrior is like 887384 times better than the shitload trainwreck called Blood. I stopped playing Blood when I first heard those annyoing monks' awful voice. They make Super Mario look like a heterosexual person.

So you literally stopped playing Blood on the first level. Don't even try to deny that this is you. You type exactly the same way and obviously have the same retarded idiosyncrasy. Most people simply like both games, don't know what it is about Blood that gets you menstruating every time Shadow Warrior is discussed or vice versa. You honestly sound 13 years old.
>>
>>4221550
You are confusing me for someone else.

Also, I, personally, did complete Blood on Extra Crispy. What can I say. I've played worse games (Dark Forces 1 or TekWar, for example). I sure as hell played better games too (HeXen 1, for example). All in all, I would rate Blood the same as Marathon 1 (which I've completed on Total Carnage) and slightly lower than Eradicator.

And it's not like I consider Shadow Warrior to be THE pinnacle of 2.5D shooters, far from it. I very much prefer Bradley's Cybermage to it and all the other Build games I've seen, for once.

But all in all, I must say, it was one damn fine and entertaining game. And out of all Build games, I probably enjoyed it the most.

>Don't even try to deny that this is you.
Get your prejudiced ass out of here. I don't even know who you are talking about.

>You type exactly the same way and obviously have the same retarded idiosyncrasy.
Because two different people just can't have semi-similar opinions on any given matter, now can they?

>Most people simply like both games, don't know what it is about Blood that gets you menstruating every time Shadow Warrior is discussed or vice versa.
Well, I sure am happy for them. But I happen to have my own opinions, and I don't see any reason to hold back on them just because some anonymous cocksucker gets triggered and starts whining for the sole reason my opinions happen to mismatch his.
>>
>>4221670
Also, while I HAVE stated my preference for SW over Blood quite a lot on other Web resources, this is literally the first time I am writing anything on this matter on 4chan. First and foremost, because I am not a particularly frequent visitor here (meaning both /vr/ and 4chan in general).
>>
>>4221670
>>4221702
I don't believe you. Gonna leave this as a tldr because I don't have time for the petty 4chan autism kiddo.

Apparently OP doesn't, "Wanta sum Wang!" Your loss OP.

Stick to Witchhaven, and don't let a sticky bomb hit you in the ass on the way out!
>>
>>4221964
What you believe is your problem, not mine. In any case, I really do appreciate you stopping to waste my time with your nonsense. Whatever your reasons are.
>>
>>4222157

STICKYBOMBA RIKE OP!
>>
>>4221670
>Dark Forces 1
That game is fantastic and your opinions suck.
>>
>>4222632
That game is a broken piece of shit, and I stopped playing it after those hitscanning assholes with concussion rifles started showing up. Plus I am generally not a fan of all things StarWars-related, and I was playing that game only due to its alleged "le historicale singificance". That being, said Jedi Knight 1 eliminated pretty much all of my qualms, regarding Dark Forces 1, and is a perfectly OK (even though I have some qualms with its level-design practices) game in my book. And what 3 levels I've played of Mysteries of the Sith, were just awesome through and through, even if admittedly looking like ass (in comparison to the original Jedi Knight), and I was having pretty much the same kind of fun with it, I was having with, actually, Shadow Warrior and Cybermage before that. In any case, right now, I prefer to regard Dark Forces 1 simply as Jedi Knight 1's semi-prototype semi-alpha-version.

That being said, I've definitely played still worse games, than Dark Forces 1 too. Wrath of the Earth being one of them. So it's not like I regard Dark Forces 1 as something from the _very_ bottom of the barrel.
>>
>>4220429
None, there aren't any that can run the full game and expansions properly, so you're stuck with dosbox.

I find it odd that we have a proper sourceport for Duke, but we can't just jam other Build games in that and make them run.
>>
>>4220398
>Shadow Warrior
>freeware

wat.
>>
>>4223241
With the release of Shadow Warrior Classic Redux, the original Shadow Warrior became free.
