Nice video. Thanks for posting.

>implying the SNES was any better when it came to music
Then again you're not wrong. I'm soundeing like a broken record at this point, but if you want actually good geam music, then try composing for the PS1 OP. That way you won't get either farts or a shitty tape recording of someone playing a children's keyboard.

If you really wanna be a gangsta be one of those chaps who builds an arduino bread boarded circuit with a surplus YM2612 chip
>>4204809
Too bad it doesn't work on Windows 8.
>>4206291
I have it, but it has my name attached to it and I'm not sure how to remove that so I can remain anonymous. You're on your own.
>>4206260
You obviously never played any Sega Genesis games, filthy casual. Splatterhouse, Sonic, Streets Of Rage all had great music.

>composing
>for PS1
you didn't compose for PS1, you just made regular music and put it on the CD
you dingus
comparing gen/snes to PS1 is like comparing a microwave to an oven
>>4207467
>psx music is just cd audio.
>what is the psf music format?
whos the dingus here?

You mean compose

I don't think GENNY vst has been mentioned. I think that might be worth a look
>>4204809
Very intersting indeed. I've always been pretty intimidated by FM synthesis - it's pretty fucking complicated to get your head around compared to subtractive synthesis, so I can see why a lot of Genesis composers just used the preset sounds.
>>4207431
>Too bad it doesn't work on Windows 8.
DOSBox is your friend.
>>4207467
Most popular games used psf and not CD audio you dumb faggot
That is very cool, OP.
>>4207750
That's a different FM chip, it's the high end 6 OP model used in professional music equipment. The Genesis and arcade games used a cheaper 4 OP chip.
>>4208992
It should still be able to do what the Genesis chip could do if you limit yourself to four operators when programming your sounds though.

I'd tend to agree that Yamaha DX synths and their software emulations are obviously perfect for getting that Genesis sound but in my experience not so good at dialing up specific Genesis patches without some work. For instance a parameter's range on the YM2612 may be from 0-127 but on a DX keyboard (or the interface at least), that very same parameter's range is simplified to 0-100.

Is jesper kyd one of the few genesis guys who made custom sounds for the music?

Hitoshi Sakamoto for starters as well as Koshiro for BK3.
>>4211504
Nice, never played this one before
>>4211493
well, no, sort of.
Jesper used his own sound driver that was far different than GEMS. It was kept more or less a secret, but was tracker based I think. (He did start out in the Amiga scene, after all!)
But all of the sounds he created were indeed custom, untainted by the default instrumentation from GEMS.
but even within GEMS, plenty of other musicians created custom sounds for the better:

>>4211504
These artists, as well as almost every Japanese composer, didn't use GEMS.
in this case, Hitoshi Sakamoto appears to have written his own driver, and Yuzo Koshiro hopped around using several drivers...apparently.
this page lists a good number of games and the sound drivers used, for reference:

I'm really interested in making PS1 music. Do you have any idea what software they used to synthesize music for it back then? What was Sekitou Tsuyoshi using when he composed Brave Fencer Musashi's soundtrack or Nobuo Uematsu when he composed FF7 through FF9's soundtrack?

Getting MID2SMPS working is hard but worth it
>>4211643
Do any of these work on Windows 8?
>>4212239
Yeah I'm on Windows 10 and I use VOPM and GENNY.
Precaution for GENNY though, you're gonna need a instrument pack and it doesn't use the same instrument pack you'd use in VOPM

Here's your OPMs for all the Genesis games for VOPM though
