NES and SNES are easily pronounceable as words so there's no reason not to. Almost any time the initials of something make a decent word they become an acronym (NASA, NATO, UNESCO) rather than an initialism (FBI, BBC, DVD.) It's by no means always true, but the acronym wins out here.

People should just not use the term in sentences in a way that assumes it should be read as "ness" and not NES. Example:
