>What is Phantasy Star online?
PSO is an MMO game from 2000 by Sega released on PC, Dreamcast, Xbox and Gamecube. It is a Hack and slash MMO, There are multiple classes and skills to chose from that each specialize in specific masteries, such as close range combat, ranged combat or offensive and support techniques.
>How do I play?
While the servers are dead, there are still private servers up and running. The most populated server is Ephinea, where it still gets constant updates and new quests and other things to choose from. You can sign up and download at: https://ephinea.pioneer2.net

I've got Blue Shift with the offline server so I can play solo...vanilla sucks shit since it has no resolution options and like the last poster says, looks like ass.
Not that PSO looks all that nice at any res, but smoothing out the edges is an improvement and the game is fun enough.

You're nuts m8. PSO looks amazing and has since the Dreamcast. There's more to graphics than technology and I would dare to say PSO is one of the greatest looking games ever.

splitscreen on the gc version is pretty neat.
also it running it on the wii through nintendont, you can force widescreen during splitscreen.
probably the best offline console experience

Not really. It's distinctively a cooperative game.
IMO if you're gonna solo check out Phantasy Star Portable 2 on PSP. It should emulate with PPSSPP on toasters.

You're missing out on most of the strategy if you play offline. It's just a really tiring grinding session with drawn-out damage sponge boss battles.
Get the PC or DC version online or don't play at all.

Multiplayer doesn't make the game any more interesting. You visit the same handful of areas, grind on the same enemies for hours on end, then fight damage-sponge bosses so you can unlock the next area.
The quests are never anything more elaborate than fetching items and doing simple escort missions.
Not frankly sure why OP thought this deserved a general on /vr/ of all places.

Although the dev is a bit of a prick, devolution can emulate the GameCube's 56k modem, and has presets for connecting to different 3rd party servers. There's a guide somewhere, but I forget where.

Everything about the Phantasy Star Universe series is horrible - the graphics, the art design, the gameplay, the fuck awful crafting system, the story written by 11 year old dweebs.
The closest thing to playing PSO other than PSO is actually Phantasy Star Zero on NDS, but it's not retro so I'll say no more on the subject.

It actually is, but there is no reason to restrict yourself to offline considering the latest version of the game is still playable online to this day.

There is no rule forbidding the mention or discussion of non-retro games if they are relevent to the main topic of the thread, which is the only thing that DOES have to be retro.
