quake 2 on ps1 looked a lot sharper and had faster gameplay than the n64 version. it's pretty impressive considering the maps are almost half-life quality and the hl port had to wait until dreamcast/ps2

Honestly it's been over a decade since I played it on N64, and from what I remember the maps on N64 weren't even similar to the original ones. I like that the PS1 maps are almost identical. The lack of explosive barrels bothers me

Quake 2 for N64 is an entirely different game. All of the maps were built from the ground up for the N64 exclusively, and it had some exclusive multiplayer features as well. What really kills the N64 port is the choppy weapon animations.

Didn't q2 on N64 use some weapons from q1? I think I remember using some sort of minimum with 4 barrels that had really shitty animation when I played it back in the day. I think I'm gonna have to try the N64 one again.

Not even close. The levels in the PS1 version had significantly reduced geometry even from the N64 version. It's pretty obvious if you compare the first level of each port, which are both based on the same design. And the N64 levels aren't Half-Life quality themselves.
