She's the ultimate nuker if you give her a Golden Stud. Flare is perfect for doing a lot of damage to multiple enemies enemies quickly and still holds up very well against single targets. Fire 2 is no slouch for most of the game either.

For some reason, I always got the impression that Crono, Lucca, and Marle were all around the same age when I played CT as a kid. I assumed Crono and Lucca were like 15, and Marle was 14, or something.

this. Flare is a beast spell. Her lack of healing spells makes her kinda shitty as a support character compared to frog or marle though.

Good personality, was always supporting Crono as the protagonist instead of trying to compete with him because grrl power wasn't a thing yet. She seemed to genuinely care about your well-being as a friend or a sister, showing emotional vulnerability, but being a valuable asset to the team with her science knowledge. She also gets the most character-exclusive plot equipment which makes her feel a bit more fleshed out. There were also the monsters with huge defense that you could lower if you hit them with fire which made her feel even more valuable.

As a kid who played through very slowly, she felt like the character to bring in when I needed high magic damage. Lucca + Robo's DoubleVBomb does absurd damage near Robo, Lucca + Frog's Frog Flare at 1 HP does the highest damage in the entire game, Lucca + Ayla's Fire Whirl is one of the strongest damage all techs that doesn't have any conditions to it and is stronger than 2 single techs. The problem was enemies that nullified or absorbed fire damage, her gun damage was both random and had a low max damage (not counting wondershot, kids didn't know how to manipulate RNG).

Also as a kid I hated managing my MP or using consumable items (OCD problems, I'm more comfortable with it now) so I generally preferred Frog and Ayla for their strong physical attacks when I could just hold down confirm.

Overshadowed when you get the rest of the team. Storywise, very important since she's the one that made the thing that sent you back and even more importantly, reactivated Robo.

But once you get Robo and Frog, you put her in less and less since whatever she can do, they can do better outside of pure fire damage and once you get Magus she's obsolete. Her saving grace is a few decent double techs which don't cost a lot of mana and hit multiple enemies which is always good.

I feel like you're ignoring the fact that a lot of her equipment can be pretty great. The gear her dad gives her gives her some good stat boosts and extra resistances for a not insignificant section of the game, and she gets some nice status effect-inducing weapons too. Her fire techs are useful for those hammer-wielding dudes in the Denadoro mountains, and flame toss and napalm are nice cheap area effect damage before you get higher level (but more expensive) multi-target direct damage spells.

As for Lucca, I liked her for the story-- primarily I used Crono, Lucca, Marle but once Frog and the others joined the team, she got less combat time.

Can't believe all the people in here worshiping Frog. He was one of the worst in the party. I hated the forced Frog segments even though I thought he was a good character, his sprite made him unappealing to use.

Though in terms of plot and personality:

Lucca>Ayla>Robo=Frog>Magus>Marle>Chrono

Marle's Haste is nice but it won't ever stop you from dying or help you kill anything noticeably faster, because it comes at the expense of a character slot.

Not as strong as Ayla's 9999 critical hit, not as strong as multi-hit single techs with the prism specs. In regular battles, it's much stronger than anything that's ever necessary to clear the screen (you could just cast flare), in boss fights it's always better to use Triple Kick and Confuse while Robo heals. It's the strongest tech in a situation that literally never happens ever. Therefor it's not useful.

I liked her better than Marle. I didn't really care about having the most effective characters in combat, since the game wasn't that hard anyway. I was really endeared to her when she jumped into the time portal not knowing what would happen to her to rescue you and bust you out of prison. That's the kind of friend you marry.

First playthroughs always had her in the team. Last one barely used her. But she does have based equipment thanks to her father which can make a her tank with the other top equip of the game. Storywise she is a great companion.

Marle is pure shit though, not the character, but as a teammate. Storywise it seems she is just there after saving her from death, except for that sidequest with the King.
Robo is good, but Ayla... is a beast. I always need to have Ayla in the team, except for some boss that only takes magic damage
